Dragon Ball Super Manga to Finally Get New Content

Dragon Ball Super Manga to Finally Get New Content

Summary

  • Dragon Ball Super manga has not been canceled despite being on hiatus since March.
  • Toyotaro worked on other projects within the franchise, like Dragon Ball Super Divers.
  • Challenges with starting new arcs may be delaying the return to regular serialization.

This has been a tough year for Dragon Ball fans. Akira Toriyama’s passing was one of the saddest news this year, and impacted everyone, leaving not only fans mourning, but also several manga artists shocked by the news.

Dragon Ball Daima, a new anime that debuted in October, was supposed to be a fun celebration for the franchise’s 40th anniversary, but, while the anime is indeed fun, it also suddenly became Toriyama’s swan song Dragon Ball series, giving it a totally different meaning for many.

Since March, Dragon Ball Super manga, penned by Toyotaro with Toriyama’s supervision, has been on hiatus. The Series Has Not Been Canceled

While no news has been shared about the manga returning from hiatus, they have also not officially canceled it, which means it is still likely Toyotaro plans to keep serializing it. News about the hiatus might be dropped alongside the new chapter in February, though.

Toyotaro Kept Working for the Franchise on Other Fronts in 2024

The manga has not been getting any content, and it’s understandable that Toyotaro would have a hard time trying to continue it without Toriyama (for both emotional and technical reasons). But he has been working with the franchise and recently published a one-shot for Dragon Ball Super Divers, a new arcade game released in Japan. It’s hard to write two stories at the same time, so he had probably put Divers as his priority in the last months.

The latest Dragon Ball Super chapters brought an end to the Tournament of Power arc, and starting new arcs can be very challenging. Also, there are still three Super chapters that have been published but not compiled into a volume yet. Toyotaro likely intends to keep serializing it, but might to be trying to figure out how to continue the story alone.

Dragon Ball Super is available to stream on Crunchyroll. The manga is published in English by VIZ Media.
