Best Tips To Play Temtem: Swarm

Temtem: Swarm is a charming take on the original game, but this time around, you’ll be playing as the Temtem in a survival and roguelike experience. With each Temtem comes a unique set of skills and survival potential, and constant decision-making is a major part of the gameplay loop.

Which ones are your favorites?

There are several upgrades to encounter, Temtem to capture, and skills to invest in. Easy to get into but tough to master—Temtem: Swarm takes roguelike elements and asks you to hone a unique playstyle. Regardless of which Temtem you decide to get good with, these tips and tricks will help polish this process.

This is an Early Access game, and as such, it might change as it gets updated!

Switching Between Automatic And Manual Aiming

Using an ultimate ability in Temtem: Swarm.

If this is your first time playing the game, you’ll notice that manually aiming where you wish to attack (whilst moving the Temtem) will help you clear out specific areas filled with enemies. Or, it can help you move in the direction you like while clearing off any hurdles.

However, sometimes it’s best to let the game do the job for you while your attention is on other things. At the same time, completely relying on this isn’t beneficial. Try to find a balance, especially if your Temtem does a ranged attack.

When clearing intense swarms, try to focus on the direction you’re moving in and let auto-attack take care of enemies.

Upgrade Magnetic Abilities

Choosing an ability in Temtem: Swarm.

Out of all the upgrades you can get early in the game, investing in Magnetic Module is a must! This helps you pull resources towards you as you move about the map, destroying everything and everyone in the way. It also makes the process of leveling up faster towards the endgame.

Once you’re at level four of this ability, your “pull” will be strong enough to get items that are far from your reach. This is especially useful when battling a boss or a large enemy that’s keeping you from standing still.

Rather than relying on your ultimate attack as a weapon, think of it as a tool. First, focus on the direction you’re moving in and carefully move to objectives (such as events) while dodging enemies. Next, use your ultimate to clear out enemies that are chasing you, or a boss that you’re trying to take down.

Much of Temtem: Swarm’s gameplay is a mix of survival and combat skills. This means that you’ll need to use the game’s movement mechanics to your advantage, and that’s when your ultimate ability will come in handy.

Look For Collectibles Around You

Collecting items in Temtem: Swarm.

As you traverse the map, you’ll come across objects that may not draw your attention. Certain items (like boxes) can be broken, giving you resources that can help your journey. Some of these resources are also awarded to you when you’ve defeated a boss or an equally daunting enemy.

While they don’t have clear indicators on the map, they’ll usually be highlighted by a slight hue of purple/violet. It’s best to manually attack this item rather than relying on auto-attack since it’s easy to miss out on these items when running away from a horde of enemies.

Replace Items And Abilities When Needed

Replacing an ability in Temtem: Swarm.

Now and then, you’ll have to make a decision that may alter the gameplay experience a little. You’ll be asked to select a technique/ability or a gear item when your Temtem levels up. Doing this will improve stats and survivability. Replace the previous ability you were relying on if the new one promises better synergy.

When something new pops up that you haven’t taken before, it’s okay to choose that item/ability. For instance, instead of choosing the Blockade technique to upgrade your defenses, equipping the Fortify Band could be more useful.

Keep checking your current abilities by pausing the game.

Upgrade Survival Skills First

Skill tree in Temtem: Swarm.

Once you play a game or a few, you will unlock the ability to upgrade a Temtem’s traits permanently. These include attack damage, speed, defense, and so on. Out of all these, it’s best to make sure your Temtem is fast and strong enough, rather than deadly and hard-hitting in battle.

If you do this, you’ll encourage your Temtem to survive a map’s harsh enemies early in the game. As you collect resources, you’ll anyway acquire abilities while playing the game. While there are no limitations on how you can traverse the map, enemies can be of varying types, so it’s best to be prepared!

Picking A Temtem

Picking Smazee in Temtem: Swarm.

When you first play the game, there are just two Temtem to choose from. Even if you’re a player who prefers ranged combat, we strongly suggest trying out Smazee first. This Temtem’s melee attacks grow increasingly strong as the match progresses. Once evolved into an even mightier Temtem, this powerful fighter pushes aggressively through swarms of enemies without worrying much about damage taken.

No matter which Temtem you pick, make sure you evolve them the moment the opportunity arrives. Even though it’s optional, it’s a great choice for solo players and groups alike to feel stronger in the game as the difficulty grows. In rare cases, it makes sense to pick an ability over an evolution, so decide this based on how powered (or overpowered) your Temtem feels at the moment.

When playing as Smazee, try to implement techniques like Haito Uchi and Martial Strike to deal short to medium-range damage.

Mix Up Your Arsenal

Evolving a Temtem in Temtem: Swarm.

Techniques are important to upgrade as you work your way through swarms and objectives. Blending in a range of techniques ensures that your Temtem is all-rounded, almost like a jack of all trades. This will reflect a lot when you battle the final boss, so… think ahead, especially if you’re playing solo and don’t have a group to back you up.

If your Temtem does a lot of melee damage, it’s a good idea to also inculcate a few attacks that keep the vicinity safe. Attacks like Boomerang and Data Burst are great for long-range combat. The best way to keep your arsenal versatile is to have both melee and ranged attacks, without replacing a single ability.

Take Part In Events

A tricky thing about Temtem: Swarm is how complicated managing your movement can become as the game progresses. As you level up, “events” will show up, asking you to take part in them to complete certain objectives. Try to prioritize these as it’s not worth skipping out on.

These events will show up randomly at different points on the map, and you’ll have to traverse to them. Some of them will allow you to unlock a new Temtem, while others will reward you with resources.

If an event requires you to stay in one place, try circling within that area. Avoid staying still!

Stay Aware Of Healing Items

Healing item found in Temtem: Swarm.

Other than upgrading your skills and acquiring abilities, there are a few items on the map that help you heal up. This isn’t easy to notice at first since you’ll likely be focusing on fighting through hordes of enemies, but take a look at the corners of your screen.

Every minute or so, there will be an item (like a fruit) lying around. The moment you move through it, some of your Temtem’s health is restored. While this isn’t a long-term solution to having a strong overall health bar, it’s useful when dealing with tough enemies. Additionally, try to obtain upgrades that promise maximized health and healing options while in the middle of a battle.
