Sony has invested in a Vegas Sphere tribute for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary that fittingly aims the spotlight on Astro Bot. With the Team Asobi platformer having won the prestigious Game of the Year 2024 award recently, it seems all too likely that Astro Bot is PlayStation’s newest mascot.
2024 marks three decades of PlayStation’s presence in the games industry, and Astro Bot‘s launch this year was no doubt a case of perfect timing. In addition to being a slick 3D platformer, Astro Bot is an ode to PlayStation’s rich history with over 180 cameos based on iconic video game characters affiliated to the brand. While Astro Bot does miss out on some pivotal PlayStation cameos, critics and players remain enamored with it. Astro Bot is just as robust on the commercial front as well, with over 1.5 million copies sold as of November 3.

A member of the Black Myth: Wukong development team was reportedly ‘crying’ and ‘upset’ after Astro Bot won GOTY at The Game Awards 2024.
As if the widespread acclaim wasn’t enough, Astro Bot also took home the coveted Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024 and closed out PlayStation’s 30th year with a bang. Hot off the heels of Astro Bot‘s Game of the Year win, PlayStation fans spotted a 30th anniversary celebration for the brand that recently took over the Vegas Sphere. The flashy one-and-a-half minute ad prominently features Astro Bot dancing among various PlayStation iconography, face shapes, and the PS5 itself. Towards the end, the entire Vegas Sphere emulates the look of Astro Bot‘s helmet and eyes, issuing one last wink to viewers before finally fading out.
Vegas Sphere Celebrates 30 Years of PlayStation With Astro Bot
The Vegas Sphere ad is rather unexpected and likely very expensive, but still a great cherry on top for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Sony first announced the PlayStation festivities in September 2024 with bespoke PS1-style 30th anniversary PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles, DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, and PlayStation Portal remote players. On December 3, Sony released a 30th anniversary tribute video that featured several of PlayStation’s most renowned franchises and thanked fans for their continued support.
It’s also worth noting that the focus on Astro Bot in PlayStation’s Vegas Sphere ad seems quite intentional, especially after the platformer’s major victories at The Game Awards 2024. It wouldn’t be too surprising if PlayStation started embracing Astro Bot as its de facto mascot going forward, given the character’s family-friendly nature, easy marketability, and multiple well-received games. The future for both Astro Bot and Team Asobi looks quite bright.
