Arcane Creator Says No Season 3 But More Spinoffs

Arcane, inspired by the popular video game League of Legends, is a critically acclaimed animated series on Netflix. Despite its popularity and fans wanting more seasons, the creators decided to wrap up Jinx and Vi’s story after Season 2. Arcane co-creator Christian Linke gave the series an open ending, leaving fans to speculate whether Jinx died or survived after the explosion in the finale. Christian Linke, the co-creator of Arcane, is happy about the positive reception of the series and proud of what they did in the final act.

Linke sat down for an exclusive interview with The Direct. During the chat, he spoke about the fate of the much-loved animated Netflix series. He doubled down on the decision that Arcane was over after Season 2, but they would bring new spinoffs. “Not Season 3 so much, but individual stories of certain characters that are in ‘Arcane,’ in both seasons,” the series creator said. Linke and his team already have an idea as to who among the characters will have their own shows. “[There] definitely are like, ‘Hey, let’s continue their stories in their own kind of franchises and stories.’ So definitely, ‘Arcane’ is just the first. We want to continue telling stories,” Linke continued. He previously said that at least three characters – Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia – would be featured next.

In another interview, Linke explained why Arcane was ending after two seasons. According to him, it was always the plan because they had a “specific story in mind.” He acknowledged that they could have stretched it but he didn’t want to force themselves to be creative to remain faithful to the original story, considering that they had already spent nine years crafting the characters in their story. “This is the story that we had in our heads that we want to tell. It’s irresponsible to stretch this to a point where it feels like we can’t even really do it justice. I think that was a big part of it,” Linke explained. “We don’t want to overdo it.”

The creators sticking to their original plan to keep the series short by ending it after two seasons was heartbreaking for some Arcane fans who want to see more of Jinx and Vi’s adventures, especially after the finale left Jinx’s fate unclear. However, the announcement of new spinoffs somewhat eases the disappointment because there is something to look forward to. There are multiple spinoffs in the pipeline, but only one is in development. The team has been working on it for about a year and the project is expected to be released in late 2026 or early 2027.

The interest in more spinoffs is understandable because League of Legends has rich lore, and fans want to know more about the characters’ backgrounds. By expanding beyond the traditional games, fans will see a brand new perspective on the game, familiarize themselves with the characters in-depth and explore the other parts of the world in new dynamics. The spinoffs could also help resolve unresolved arcs or explore new elements of the game.
