Reports are highlighting that Unicorn Overlord may not be getting any more content, despite the calls for more from its fanbase. Unicorn Overlord was a largely successful outing from Vanillaware. Unicorn Overlord, the developer’s biggest project to date, iterated on the art style and many of the gameplay traditions that Vanillaware has become known for, leaving fans of the studio hoping that even more would be coming soon.

GamesRadar talked to Takafumi Noma about the probability of a successor to Unicorn Overlord, and unfortunately, the game’s director says the chances appear slim right now. Noma stated that there are no plans to continue the development of the series, regardless of whether it’s as DLC or a sequel. Noma expressed gratitude for the way that Unicorn Overlord has been received by players, but it just doesn’t seem like there’s a future in mind for the game right now.

Unicorn Overlord Director Says There Are No More Plans

Takafumi Noma noted that although there aren’t any plans at Vanillaware for more Unicorn Overlord, continuing the series with DLC, or providing it with a PC port are ideas that he’s open to. It seems that as long as they get the green light from Sega and Atlus, moving forward with Unicorn Overlord is something its developers would be happy to do. Gamers have been asking for a Unicorn Overlord PC port, but despite the demand from fans, it appears that that’s not enough right now.

It’s unclear whether this is the end for Unicorn Overlord as a whole. Vanillaware has seen more success with this title than it has many of its other releases, with Unicorn Overlord hitting 1 million sales faster than 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Dragon’s Crown. Including Unicorn Overlord, Vanillaware has published its last three titles with Atlus, a company that the last decade has been great for with games like Metaphor: ReFantazio and the Persona franchise. Vanillaware may be searching for a Persona-sized hit before moving into franchising its releases. However, it could be just as difficult to create hype for a series without having a recognizable property that’s been proven over time. Regardless, Vanillaware seems ready to move on to the next project.
