Team Fortress 2 Releases First Comic in Seven Years

Summary

  • Team Fortress 2’s long-awaited final webcomic issue brings closure to the game’s lore after 7 years.
  • The comic concludes various character plot points, providing fans with proper endings and a time skip.
  • Fans appreciate the dedication and perfect conclusion, thanking Valve for helping the comic survive development hell.

Valve has released the final issue of Team Fortress 2‘s long-running webcomic, with this also being the first update to the comic in seven years. Fans of Team Fortress 2 are used to waiting long periods of time for Valve to update its game. Updates to TF2 can sometimes take anywhere between months to even years, especially in the 2020s. However, one thing that fans waited for and were certain was never going to reach a conclusion was its long-running webcomic.

The Team Fortress 2 webcomics were at first used to tie into various major updates, such as its Scream Fortress events, or provide some bits of lore. However, in 2013, the comic started a long-form arc known as Team Fortress Comics. It featured an in-depth story that explored various aspects of each of the playable mercenaries, including the characters from the first Team Fortress game. However, the comic faced several delays with its release. The comic went on hiatus in 2017 right before the release of its final issue, and head writer of the comic, Erik Wolpaw, temporarily leaving Valve after Issue #6’s release didn’t help things either.

Team Fortress 2 Update Makes Unexpected Change 17 Years After Launch

After 17 years, Valve finally addresses an issue that has been impacting a Team Fortress 2 character since the game’s launch.

Fans finally got a bit of good news in July when Valve writer Jay Pinkerton announced the Team Fortress 2 webcomic would finally be coming back. The seventh and final installment of Team Fortress 2‘s comic, “The Days Have Worn Away,” was finally released on December 20, 2024. The seventh issue picks up from the sixth issue’s cliffhanger ending to conclude several plot points that were set up seven years ago. These include the resolution of Scout’s crush on Ms. Pauling, the Administrator’s past with the Mann family, and even the Soldier’s romance with Zhanna. The comic can be read on TF2‘s official website.

Team Fortress Comics Concludes After a Seven-Year Hiatus

The main thing that the seventh issue does is bring closure to Team Fortress 2‘s lore and storyline, giving fans a mostly proper conclusion to the characters and saying goodbye to them. There’s even a time skip that shows what the iconic mercenaries are doing in the future, having settled down and getting their happy endings. The last few pages of the issue even briefly breaks the fourth wall to thank the reader for sticking with the comic as long as they did.

Many fans were incredibly taken aback to see that the comic survived development hell and the story finally ending after a seven-year hiatus. Some fans even said they teared up at the dedication to Soldier’s voice actor, Rick May, at the start of the comic. Many Team Fortress 2 fans thanked the writers and Valve for providing the perfect conclusion, in time for the holidays.
