Resident Evil 9 is one of the most anticipated games at the moment, and even though it has yet to officially be revealed, there is already plenty of hype surrounding the project. After the events of Village, it’s unclear where Resident Evil 9 will take players, but an outpouring of leaks and rumors have shed potential light on what to expect. Leaks and rumors should be met with skepticism until officially confirmed, but the various claims surrounding the next chapter have been compelling.
As of now, the only current thing confirmed about Resident Evil 9 is that it’s in development. Being directed by Resident Evil 7‘s Koshi Nakanishi, the project is in promising hands, but neither he nor Capcom have revealed any concrete details about the story, setting, or protagonist. The wait for Resident Evil 9 may be longer than hoped for, but whenever an announcement trailer finally sees the light of day, the ongoing question about what perspective the game will use needs an answer.

What to Expect From the Resident Evil Franchise in 2025
2024 has been big for Resident Evil rumors and leaks, which could be a signal that 2025 may be an exciting year for the franchise.
RE7 and Village Strayed From Tradition
Unlike other games in the franchise, Resident Evil 7 and Village opted for a first-person perspective with its protagonist. This may not seem like a big deal at first, but these titles marked the first time in the mainline franchise that the protagonist couldn’t be seen in third-person. Newcomer Ethan Winters led the two aforementioned entries, which made the use of a first-person viewpoint make more sense, considering he was an unknown to the series. However, if recent leaks are to be trusted, then Resident Evil 9‘s lead may be better suited for the classic third-person.
Other leaks have claimed that Resident Evil 9 could feature an evolved race of Zombies that worship the moon.
Resident Evil Leaks Point to Familiar Faces
- Leon S. Kennedy
- Jill Valentine
One of the biggest Resident Evil 9 leaks to make rounds on the internet is in regard to the protagonists. There has been an onslaught of intriguing leaks, but one of the most compelling is the claim that Leon and Jill will return. If this is the case, then a first-person perspective wouldn’t make much sense. Through the years, players have become incredibly attached to Leon and Jill, and not being able to see them during gameplay could prove to be wildly controversial. Since players didn’t have a previous connection to Ethan Winters, first-person was easier to accept, but giving the same treatment to Jill and Leon would potentially be a huge misstep.
The prospect of another dual protagonist Resident Evil game is exciting, but making it first-person would render that dynamic pointless. After the events of Village and its Shadows of Rose DLC, Ethan is seemingly dead, so the possibility of him coming back for the next installment is highly unlikely, unless there’s some massive twist on the horizon.
The Shadows of Rose DLC opts for third-person. Village eventually added a third-person perspective for players, as well.
Resident Evil 9’s Timeline is Unclear
It’s now been three years since Village was released, and in that time, speculation has been piling up. While the Winters family saga has been compelling, and may even continue in future storylines, there is also a strong desire for fan-favorite protagonists to finally get the spotlight again. Chris Redfield is the only classic character who has been present for this specific saga, but Resident Evil 9 will hopefully change that.
Currently, it feels like no announcement for Resident Evil 9 is in sight, but Capcom could always bring a surprise reveal forward. As questions and rumors continue to arise in the wake of an impending announcement, the character’s perspective will hopefully be at the forefront of the first reveals.
