Everyone kept wondering why the folks in The Two Towers kept banging on about Helm’s Deep being unconquerable, and we got to see why exactly that was in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. If you’re someone who loved the movie, then good news, Amazon just dropped pre-orders for the Steelbook version of the movie. And from what we’ve seen so far, it looks super promising.

Starting off with the design, we’re looking at some brilliant cover art that captures Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Héra on the cover in this gorgeous, moody style that perfectly matches the tone of Rohan’s darkest hours. Pop it open, and you’ll find a detailed map of Rohan spread across the inside. At $38, you’re getting quite the package: a pristine 4K disc for the home theater enthusiasts, a regular Blu-ray that’ll play anywhere, and a digital copy for when you want to revisit the story on the go.

Inside The War Of The Rohirrim

The story dives into one of Middle-earth’s most fascinating periods, taking place nearly 200 years before Aragorn and company made their famous last stand. At its heart is Helm Hammerhand, Rohan’s ninth king, brought to life by Brian Cox, and if you’ve seen him as Logan Roy in Succession, you know exactly why this casting is perfect. Cox brings that same commanding presence and barely contained fury to Helm, a king watching his realm collapse around him.

The plot kicks into high gear when Wulf, a Dunlending lord with revenge burning in his heart, shows up at the gates of Rohan. The son of a man Helm killed in what he considered righteous judgment, Wulf’s not just after the throne – he wants to erase the entire legacy of the Horse-lords. We get to witness brutal campaign that drives Helm and his people back to their last refuge: the fortress that would one day bear his name.

But here’s where things get really interesting. Enter Héra, Helm’s daughter, played by the talented Gaia Wise. When the situation looks bleakest, she emerges as a leader in her own right, rallying what remains of Rohan’s scattered forces. It’s a part of Rohirrim history we’ve never seen before, offering a fresh perspective on leadership in Middle-earth’s male-dominated warrior culture. And hey, they even got Miranda Otto back to narrate as Éowyn – and really, who better to tell this story than the Shield-maiden who would later help save this very fortress?

The whole package really feels like it’s been put together by people who are really passionate about Tolkien’s world. Between the voice casting, the animation style, and the focus on one of Middle-earth’s most interesting untold stories, this is exactly the deep dive into Rohirrim history we’ve waited for since we first heard those horns echo across the Riddermark.
