After Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket released its Mythical Island booster set, some players took to social media to share how one of the new Basic Pokemon cards, Druddigon, could shake up the metagame. Pokemon TCG Pocket players pointed out how Druddigon’s ability and health pool could change how early game setups are managed.

Known as the Cave Pokemon, Druddigon is one of the new cards that arrived with Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s Mythical Island expansion. As a Dragon-type Pokemon card, Druddigon is a Basic Pokemon with 100 HP and no weaknesses. Although Druddigon does not evolve into another Pokemon, it has the ability of Rough Skin that comes into play when the Cave Pokemon is in the Active Spot. If Druddigon takes damage when it is the Active Pokemon, Rough Skin will deal 20 damage to its attacker, which can force players to waste a Potion early on. However, Druddigon’s Retreat cost of two Energy cards and dependence on Fire and Water Energy for its Dragon Claw attack limits its chances of counterattacking.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Bug Hides Freebies From Players

A recently introduced Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket bug can annoyingly make players miss out on multiple free items per day.

Although Dragon and Metal Pokemon have not received much attention in Pokemon TCG Pocket, some players pointed out that Druddigon could have a niche use. On the r/PTCGP subreddit, a user named Lofus1989 discussed how Druddigon could be used to take down some overpowered cards in the Mythical Island set. With Druddigon being a Basic Pokemon, it can immediately be placed in the Active Spot if pulled within a player’s opening hand as a wall that can allow players to set up their Benched Pokemon for later turns. Druddigon’s Rough Skin also acts as a deterrent against some early attacks, as the damage can add up with each turn. Paired with cards that decrease Retreat costs, Druddigon can allow a Pokemon like Rapidash or Greninja to swap in and knock out the opposing Active Pokemon after letting Rough Skin deal some early chip damage.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Players Share How Underrated Druddigon Is

Compared to the mainline Pokemon Trading Card Game rules, the 20-card deck limit of Pokemon TCG Pocket means that cards that can heal back damage come at a premium, making Druddigon a useful counter to Pokemon TCG Pocket meta decks in some situations. In response, some Pokemon TCG Pocket players shared how they have created decks that can utilize Druddigon’s Rough Skin to its full potential.

With more events planned for Pokemon TCG Pocket in 2025, the latest mobile hit from The Pokemon Company shows no signs of slowing down. Only time will tell what strategies players will form as more booster sets are introduced.
