The Ocean Hunter’s History and Recreation Process for Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii
The Ocean Hunter is an arcade exclusive Sega game that was first launched in 1998, released for the Sega Model 3 hardware. It’s a shooting gallery game that takes place in a steampunk world, where players are searching for monsters that live under the sea, such as the Kraken, Leviathan, and many more. The player is granted bounties for each beast they manage to defeat, with seven bosses in total.
Despite being one of Sega’s best games on the hardware, it was a technical nightmare to reproduce. While arcade games being playable in Like a Dragon is nothing new, it’s still quite a tall order to translate its old code and mechanics to be playable in-game. According to technical lead Yutaka Ito in a recent tweet, it was a “difficult task,” requiring a lot of trial and error to adjust its aiming mechanics. Despite the hurdles, the developers were able to recreate The Ocean Hunter‘s cabinet in great detail for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
