The answer is about another console just for what you pay to play online, alone. Let’s not forget mid-gen refreshes, if you’re so inclined. These companies definitely want you to double dip each generation, at least.
So you’re still paying hell of a lot for a highly limited, walled off experience. As someone who grew up with consoles, and got his first proper gaming rig a little out of highschool, there’s nothing that consoles have offered since that made the new consoles more appealing than just upgrading what I was already doing.
