In a time of microtransactions, more and more developers are using ‘free’ games to draw players in, enticing them to spend their money on in-game upgrades and enhancements. Developers have to support the maintenance of online games somehow, but some choose to implement microtransactions more ethically than others. Studies have found that most gamers find cosmetic microtransactions acceptable.

From MMOs to hero shooters and short indie games, free-to-play PC games offer quantity and quality. Here are the best free titles on the market.
However, those who play multiplayer games know that free-to-play doesn’t always mean play-to-win. Pay-to-win game models often prioritize money spent over skill and perseverance, making games less competitive in the process. But not all is lost! There are plentiful games that are free-to-play friendly and encourage play-to-win practices over spending boatloads of money.

Genshin Impact
PvE Open-World Action
Genshin Impact has quickly become a free-to-play action juggernaut. Like most games on this list, Genshin Impact has an in-game currency called Fate that impacts the scope of a player’s experience within the game.
Without spending money, a player’s ability to access certain characters is down to luck. When done right, Gacha RPG games can provide a relatively balanced experience for paying and non-paying players. Genshin Impact manages to strike that balance for the most part, but without paying real-world money, players will have to invest substantial time to earn Fate.

Marvel Rivals
Team-Based Shooter With Superheroes
Marvel Rivals seems to be genuinely play-to-win, even as it’s one of the newer free live service games on the market. It is a hero shooter, with the shooters in question being from the Marvel universe. The microtransactions are cosmetic at this stage, albeit, incredibly expensive.
The familiarity of the characters and their iconic outfit variations makes paying for skins especially tempting for Marvel fans. All characters in the game are unlocked for free, so those who do not want to spend money are still able to have the same competitive experience as those who shell out money for cosmetics.

Fortnite
Third-Person Battle Royale Alongside Other Diverse Modes
With a reputation for being accessible and diverse in its game modes, Fortnite is an inescapable part of the battle royale shooter landscape. While there have been plenty of controversies about paid skins that give a supposed benefit to players: dark color schemes, slighter frames, etc., Epic has been relatively diligent in removing skins and cosmetics that provide significant advantages.
Arguably, the qualities that provide an advantage in paid skins are also available in free skins, so if players are concerned by any incremental advantages, there are free options. Even default skins for new players can be changed now.

Call Of Duty: Warzone 2.0
First-Person Ranked And Unranked Combat
There are clear issues with calling Warzone 2.0 free-to-play when so much content is locked behind a paywall. But if players are content with the free experience of Warzone, then the game is play-to-win. There are a few free modes to choose from, including Battle Royale.
The first-person shooter has a large player base and getting started can be a baptism of fire. It is highly recommended that those just getting started follow a beginner’s guide for some tips before queuing up for that first game.

League Of Legends
Team PvP And PvE
For players who are looking for a play-to-win MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) rather than a fast-paced battle royale, League of Legends presents challenging but rewarding merit-based gameplay. It has been free-to-play friendly since its release in 2009, with in-game purchases being purely cosmetic.
League of Legends is a battle arena game that functions like a complex game of “capture the flag” with players fighting with class-based champions in teams. Curious players may spend money to play different champions, but these can be unlocked for free in the course of the game.
5
Fall Guys
Competitive Platforming
Yes, Fall Guys has fallen off in terms of its player base, but it is still one of the most purely play-to-win experiences out there. This game-show-style obstacle course hit its height of popularity in 2022.
The adorable bean-based battle royale only has cosmetic microtransactions and there is no discernable advantage to players based on money spent. Although, the temptation to buy that Doctor Who skin RIGHT NOW might prove too tempting for some. It is an adorable game that is somehow intense and anxiety-inducing in a way that even the most violent battle royales could only dream of achieving.

Another Gacha game to add to the list, Bleach: Brave Souls is an underappreciated fighting game that is free-to-play friendly. Players do not need to be familiar with the anime to enjoy this action game, but familiarity with the characters certainly provides valuable context.

The goal is to assemble a team and climb a series of leaderboards by defeating other teams. Spending money will unlock new characters for a player’s team early, but these can be unlocked in free play. Like all Gacha games, there can be substantial grind and luck involved in unlocking coveted 6-star characters.

Rocket League
Competitive Car-Based Chaos
On paper, the premise of Rocket League shouldn’t work. It’s soccer with cars, and the cars disobey the laws of gravity. Nevertheless, the game has seen great success over the years, and new game modes are still being added. Rocket League made the switch from free-to-play in 2020 when Epic Games acquired developer Psyonix.

The gameplay was already well-developed at this point, and it continues to be a merit-based game despite the microtransactions. As with other games that offer cosmetic skins, there may be marginal hitbox variations, so it’s worth keeping that in mind.

Overwatch 2
Competitive First-Person Team Shooter
Overwatch 2 is a hero shooter with five player teams and a balanced gameplay experience for paid and free players. The move from the single pay-to-own model of the original to the free-to-play model of the sequel was not popular with long-time fans. But it was great news for fans of free-to-play games.
There have been plenty of pay-to-win accusations leveled at Blizzard when new heroes are implemented. Players who play for free may have a grind ahead of them to unlock new characters. However, it still boasts a substantial player base despite the backlash it has faced.

Neverwinter is an MMORPG based in the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons which features robust play-to-win progression. As is typical with progression-based games, Play-To-Win players of Neverwinter will need time and patience. Released in 2013, it still has a small but dedicated player base. But there may be trouble on the horizon with more fantasy-based MMOs going free-to-play.
Beginners may find early gameplay extremely challenging. However, Neverwinter is still an excellent free-to-play experience for those looking to play an MMO adventure that doesn’t indulge in excessive hand-holding and features a story-rich fantasy world.
