Blue Night Saga Starts In Early January

Summary

  • Blue Exorcist anime started in 2011, newest season began in 2024.
  • Season 4 airing since October covers Beyond the Snow Saga.
  • Arc after will adapt Blue Night Remembrance starting January 4, 2025.

There’s some sort of nostalgic feeling around Blue Exorcist. Serialized since 2009 by Kazue Kato in Shueisha’s Jump SQ magazine, this manga has been part of the teen years of many people. In 2011, the beginning of the story was adapted into animation, boosting the series’ popularity.

The second season, adapting the Kyoto Saga, came only in 2017. A-1 Pictures (Fairy Tail) handled the animation for both seasons, but with different main staffs. Fans who eagerly wanted more had to wait years to finally get good news: in January 2024, the anime returned for a third season, in a different studio (VOLN) and, once again, with a different staff, with Daisuke Yoshida assuming as director.

Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night, Explained

It initially seemed that Satan possessed humans indiscriminately to obtain a vessel. However, the actual events of the Blue Night revealed otherwise.

Luckily, this time they didn’t need to wait for years again, as season 4 began airing in October. This season started covering Beyond the Snow Saga. Now it’s been revealed that, from January 4, 2025, it will be adapting this new arc, also known as Blue Night Remembrance.

Break During the Holidays

Usually, anime series take a break in the last week of the year, so the series will drop the last Beyond Snow Saga episode on December 22, then will return on January 4 with this new arc, which is arriving earlier than some would have expected.

Blue Exorcist Serialization

The Blue Night Remembrance arc takes place from volume 22 to volume 25 in the original manga. If the anime adapts it fully in the next cour, it will reach the current Of One Cloth arc, ongoing since chapter 121 (26th volume). The latest chapters can be read for free on Manga Plus and Shonen Jump services.

Blue Exorcist serialization has been going back and forth for some time. According to ANN, it was on hiatus from July 2021 to May 2022, so the author could focus on another project. Then, it went on hiatus again from January 2023 to May 2023, with no further information. Later that year, the author got COVID-19 and the series took a break in October, so she could properly recover. This year, it went on a hiatus once again, from September to November, after the author had surgery due to an undisclosed illness.

Since the series is published in a monthly magazine, having a break for a month means only one chapter will not be published during that period (in weekly magazines, it means around 4 chapters will not be published). So it’s not that big a deal, especially if it means the Kato is taking care of her health.

Blue Exorcist is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
