Tekken 8 Review – The Iron Fist Hits As Hard As Ever
Tekken 8’s shift towards aggressive matches fits the series well, and its epic campaign and great newcomers make this a mighty combatant.
The base roster is already complete, with some DLC additions already out, as well as some mysterious ones on the way. From classic characters that have been around since the first entry to new fighters debuting, you have plenty of options to choose from.
Updated on December 20, 2024, by Lucas Olah: Your Final Fantasy is about to begin. Tekken 8 is wrapping up its first season of DLC characters with Clive Rosfield, the protagonist of Final Fantasy 16. While this marks the end of the DLC pack, it’s unlikely that this pack will be the only one, as previous games also had multiple seasons of DLC characters. For now, though, our roster stands at 36 fighters, with Eddy, Lidia, Heihachi, and Clive being the DLC ones.
Jin Kazama
The Devil To End All Devils
Jin Kazama has been the series’ protagonist ever since Tekken 3, and Tekken 8 gave him the spotlight after being sidelined in the previous game. And while you’re enjoying his story, you can learn a lot about how to play with our main hero.
Jin is an amazing choice for newcomers, with a moveset that is simple to pick up and use right away, but he can become a beast of his own if you master the character.
Devil Jin
The Devil To End All Devils – With Wings
Tekken has a long history of people turning into devils, so Jin’s other half would definitely be here with him. Devil Jin is as big a part of the narrative as his human counterpart, and he continues to be amazing to play.
Unlike his human counterpart, however, is his skill ceiling. Though he’s not the hardest character out there, he will take more time and dedication to master.
Kazuya Mishima
Father Of The Year
For our protagonist to shine, we need a powerful antagonist to fight him. Thus, the former protagonist-turned-villain, Kazuya Mishima, is back as the only threat within the Mishima family.

18 Fighting Games With The Largest Rosters
Fans’ expectations for the genre keep getting higher, especially whenever a fighting game has at least 50 characters even before any DLC.
With dashes, powerful strikes, and his devil persona being part of his mechanics rather than a separate character, Kazuya can be a true menace on the battlefield.
Heihachi Mishima
How Many Times Do We Have To Teach You This Lesson, Old Man?
Fool us once, shame on you, fool us twice, shame on us. Fool us three times… Well, let’s just say that after Tekken 1 and 5, we should’ve expected that Heihachi Mishima would return. He comes with a story bit that explains where he was and how he survived.
Regardless, he’s just as powerful as he’s ever been, being one of the strongest characters in the roster. From a narrative perspective, we still need to see what will properly happen in a sequel, as Reina was a good option to carry his legacy, and reviving characters over and over doesn’t let things go forward. However, it is nice to see that such a key character will stick around.
Eddy Gordo
The One You Hate To Fight Against
Tekken 8’s first DLC character, Eddy Gordo, is one of the most popular characters in the series. He’s been around in most games, introduced in Tekken 3, and is a reason for Capoeira becoming famous in many countries – especially with how difficult it is to fight him.
His moves have a lot of range, and since Capoeira simulates a dance, it can be pretty hard to predict where he’ll hit you sometimes, making blocking a challenge, too.
Lidia Sobieska
The Prime Minister Of Combat
Our second DLC fighter is Lidia Sobieska. She’s the prime minister of Poland and a fighter who was introduced to Tekken 7, as well as a DLC fighter.
She’s a strong karate fighter, but we still have to wait and see how much of her original gameplay will stay and what will change in her fighting style. Regardless, she’s a great addition to the game.
Clive Rosfield
We’re A Long Way From Rosaria
Fighting games enjoy their guest characters, and this isn’t the first time we have someone from Final Fantasy showing up – looking at you, Noctis. This time, however, Clive from Final Fantasy 16 is gracing us with his presence.
Truthful to his series’ name, Clive has a more fantastical moveset compared to the more grounded martial arts we usually see here. He fights with a sword, uses the powers of his Eikon, Ifrit, and has very over-the-top combos, which are fitting for him, considering his gameplay in Final Fantasy.
Alisa Bosconovitch
Careful With The Chainsaws
The android menace with explosive heads, Alisa Bosconovitch, is back with her wing-like turbos and chainsaws on her arms. She was introduced in Tekken 6 and played a large role in the narrative along with Lars, where she was programmed to protect and serve Jin.

Tekken 8 Interview: “Many People Are Imitating Us”
We sat down with series director Katsuhiro Harada and producer Michael Murray to talk about Heihachi, guest characters, and the future of Tekken 8.
Alisa has a peculiar gameplay thanks to her unorthodox movements, courtesy of being a robot who can afford to do weird positions or rely on her cybernetics, such as using her own head as a bomb.
Zafina
With Some New Powers
We have another entry from Tekken 6. Zafina is an enigmatic character who helped Jin deal with the monster Azazel, the source of the Devil Gene. And now, she has to deal with having the monster Azazel inside her, which luckily for us, gives her new abilities.
She summons a hand that looks just like the Demon’s on her arm, as well as a bigger version she controls during a finishing move. It’s pretty terrifying but awesome at the same time.
Kuma And Panda
The Weirdest Love Story
What’s Tekken without some weird characters? Not many games have bears as playable characters, and we have two to choose from, though their moveset has always been the same. You can play as Heihachi’s pet, Kuma The Second (not the official name; he’s just the second Kuma), or Ling Xiaoyu’s pet, Panda.
They’re not the most straightforward options and may require some getting used to, but the bears are extremely strong in the right hands, causing a lot of damage with few moves.
Lee Chaolan
He’s Jin’s Uncle, By The Way
Violet Lee Chaolan is back in a rather cybernetic look this time around – showing off his company’s armor. Once a serious part of the story, Lee became more of a comic character, similar to others like Paul Phoenix (which we’ll get into).
Still, Lee did return to his supporting role in Tekken 6, despite having a more eccentric personality, which is highly entertaining to see, as he mixes powerful attacks with magnificent style.
Azucena Ortiz
The Coffee Enthusiast
Tekken 8 introduces Azucena Milagros Ortiz Castillo, a coffee-craving fighter from Peru, into the franchise. She doesn’t have much going for her lore-wise, entering the tournament to sponsor her coffee brand, but outside the gimmicky behavior, she’s quite the powerhouse gameplay-wise.
As for her fighting style, she’s a nightmare in the right hands. Her attacks feature many taunts that turn into counters, with situations where it looks like the opponent will hit her, only for Azucena to dodge or counter the move. You’ll need a lot of time and patience to learn all her tricks, given her high skill ceiling, but she’s a true menace.
Victor Chevalier
A Pretty Different Character
Victor Chevalier is our second brand-new fighter, as he’s pretty unique even by Tekken standards. He’s an old, stylish French fighter with a teleporting device, a gun, and a rather cyberpunk-esque sword. Oh, and he fights with knives in each hand, even during basic moves.
His voice is performed by Vincent Cassel, who worked on Westworld, Black Swan, and Ocean’s Twelve, among others – though this seems to be his first video-game-related gig.
Reina
With Some Of Heihachi’s Moves
Reina is the third new fighter introduced here. Despite being a newcomer, she has a unique place in the game’s story, being a key character in many moments even though the plot doesn’t revolve around her – though we won’t dive into that to avoid spoilers.
Reina can also be quite tricky to get used to, thanks to how diverse her moves are from one another. Still, she’s a good pick for those who enjoy being overaggressive and give little room for their opponents to breathe.
Raven
The Secret Agent
Raven, the secret agent and Ninjutsu fighter, returns to action with lots of agility and style. Introduced in Tekken 5, he grew a lot over the years, and his gameplay here in Tekken 8 is more refined than ever.
What makes him both fun and complex – and quite the powerhouse – is how fast he can be, making your opponent have a harder time keeping up with you. Just don’t get lost in your own moves.
Feng Wei
The Evil Monk
Introduced in Tekken 5, Feng Wei searches for ultimate power, either through martial arts secrets or by finding amazing fighters to challenge, improving himself in the process of some good old combat.
He displays great power here, using many strikes capable of knocking back or temporarily stunning his victim opponent. Still, his moves are quite fast, which can get your opponent off-guard as you strike them down.
Claudio Serafino
World’s Greatest Exorcist
The exorcist is back. Claudio Serafino debuted in Tekken 7, having a minor supporting role in Heihachi’s scheme of having the world’s greatest exorcist on his side as he fought Kazuya — a literal Devil. And now he’s back to keep his demon-hunting, as an exorcist should.
With a good mix of strength and speed, along with some tricks that hit people from afar, Claudio is a good option for beginners here, causing a lot of damage with his moves.
Nina Williams
It’s Not A Tekken Game Without Nina
Tekken’s most beloved assassin, who even got a spin-off all to herself, graces us all with her presence. Nina Williams has the same role in the narrative here as in previous games, being henchman number one for the antagonist – this time Kazuya.
In case fluid attacks aren’t enough for you, she’s also dual-wielding guns in some of her movements. A bit unfair to bring guns into a fistfight, but there are literal demons in the game, so we guess that’s fair.
Paul Phoenix
With His Hair Down Now
Paul Phoenix is another legendary entry in the series, even if he’s not sporting his iconic hairstyle. His attacks are as aggressive as ever, with his special even being so strong it tears his jacket’s sleeve apart. To be expected from the only outsider who was a match for Kazuya.
However, Paul’s days as a key character in the narrative are long gone, and he keeps his comic relief persona just like he did in previous games. Luckily for us, he’s a pretty funny character, so that’s not a problem.
Marshall Law
Tekken’s Bruce Lee
Where Paul goes, Marshall Law follows. They aren’t exactly rivals, but the series paired them together for fun adventures for quite some time. Still, the important part here is that we have yet another iconic character returning.
He’s as quick as ever, punching, kicking, and using his nunchaku to fight. And he’s still trying to get rich, which has been his sole goal in every tournament, which, let’s face it, is an extremely valid reason.
