Dandadans debut episode introduced the Serpoinans and their obsession with collecting banana organs to further their evolution. However, they were defeated by the awakening of Ayase Momo and Okarun‘s powers. Seemingly unwilling to accept defeat, the Serpoians returned in the ninth episode of Dandadan, but with other species like Nessie the Loch Ness monster to finally capture Momo and Okarun, extract their banana organs, and find out more about their powers.

During this rematch, the Loch Ness monster engraved its name in the hearts of the protagonists and the Serpoians alike. Its abilities were unlike anything Momo’s supernatural crew had experienced, and in terms of sheer destructiveness, they were this close to being wiped out. While Okarun seemed to know about the Loch Ness monster, Momo, Aira, and fans alike were very clueless about its history and origin.

Introducing The Loch Ness Monster

Ancient Theories And Sightings About The Monster

Very interestingly, the Loch Ness monster isn’t simply a creature of Dandadan’s making, but one that’s present in the real world from ancient folklore. Before appearing in Dandadan, the Loch Ness monster was said to have been sighted in Loch Ness, a freshwater loch in Scottish highlights from which it was titularly named. Due to its supposed sighting without much evidence, the Loch Ness monster has been considered a creature of myth ever since, and Dandadan reintroduces it in its chaotic and supernatural world.

After its introduction, Okarun, the brains and alien enthusiast of the team, instantly recognized Nessie and wondered if it should be called Kamissie instead, as it was named based on where it was found, at least according to records. Nessie was a large reptilian monster that looked very similar to the plesiosaur of the dinosaur age and dominated water environments. Despite being “recruited” by the Serpoians in Dandadan, Nessie was aggressive towards everyone around it, even attacking its supposed employers.

Nessie’s Role In The Dandadan Universe

Nessie As A Temporary Antagonist

Albeit very temporarily, Nessie played the role of an antagonist in Dandadan. Its very purpose was to eradicate the supernatural humans that the Serpoians had come across and wanted to further research, but Nessie had other plans. It sought to eradicate anything and everything around it, whether it be the supernatural trio of Okarun, Aira, and Momo, or even the Serpoians that brought it along to help them.

The way Nessie attacked even the Serpoinas, suggests that the monster may have been captured by them, as Nessie didn’t have any intelligence to follow orders and viewed everyone around it as a threat. As an antagonist, Nessie can be seen as a monster that was subdued and used to attack others against its will. It was simply following its animalistic instinct to protect itself and secure its freedom, but its involvement with the Serpoians led it to its death.

Exploring The Abilities Of The Loch Ness Monster In Dandadan

A Deadly Aquatic Menace

Aside from the Serpo Dover’s Demon combination, the Loch Ness monster’s abilities almost led to the wiping out of Momo’s crew. As a massive creature, Nessie is also incredibly strong and agile in water and can wipe out most enemies with ease. Moreover, a very standout feature is its flood-creation ability, which allows it to turn its surroundings, walls, and ceilings included, into water.

As a supposed eel-looking plesiosaur, this essentially made Nessie on its home turf throughout its appearance. Turning its surroundings to water meant Nessie could easily navigate and attack as it pleased. Aside from its flood-creation ability, Nessie’s high-compression water blasts are one thing that almost wiped out the Serpoians, Momo, Aira, and Okarun. These beams could easily slice apart solid surfaces, as seen when they easily bifurcated a Serpoian. Thankfully, Nessie’s water compression blast had a weakness that could be exploited; if not, the monster might have well been too much for Momo and her crew to handle.

After using its water compression blast, Nessie needed to recharge by absorbing water through its neck every now and then. Seeing this opportunity, the trio decided to break its neck, making it so water couldn’t be absorbed.

Nessie was powerful in its own right, but the Serpoians went further to combine it with the Dover Demon and a Serpo. In this state, aside from its primary abilities, Nessie also possessed the Dover Demon’s mantis shrimp-like arms that granted it immense punching power and not just flippers for effective swimming.

Myth Meets Reality

The Creative Adaptation Of Nessie In Dandadan

Nessie dandadan-2

Unlike the Serpoians, the Loch Ness monster isn’t a creature of the series’ making, but one that has its grounds in reality. At least, that was believed to be the case from the early to late 1900s. The Nessie portrayed in Dandadan is consistent, at least in terms of appearance and attributes that Nessie was believed to possess. Of course, things like Nessie’s water compression blast and flood-creation are all Dandadan’s unique way of making Nessie fit in with its supernatural theme.

Over time, the supposed sighting of the Loch Ness was claimed to be a hoax. Nevertheless, Dandadan introducing such a fabled monster in its tale, captured and used by aliens, no less turns it from an urban legend of reality into an intriguing creature within its universe. Nessie also opens up questions about how many real-life creatures, fabled and true, Dandadan will introduce in its lore, and the possibilities of more fabled creatures are endless.

Dandadan is now available to stream on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix.
