Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite Mod Adds Huge Visual Overhaul

Summary

  • A fan-made mod titled Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite & Beyond replaces the base game’s art style with a cel-shaded look reminiscent of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.
  • Some playable characters have new alternate color palettes, including some directly inspired by past Marvel Vs. Capcom games.
  • While free for players to download, the mod cost around $30,000 to create.

A new mod is giving Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite a major graphical overhaul thanks to the efforts of some big-name fans of the franchise. Although gamers were able to dive back into the Marvel Vs. Capcom series’ older entries earlier this year with the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics compilation, there hasn’t been a new installment since 2017’s Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite.

While fans were initially excited to see the Marvel Vs. Capcom series return after a nearly six-year absence, they were ultimately divided by Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite. While some praised the game for its streamlined controls and new Infinity Stone mechanic, others criticized it for its art direction and adhering more closely to the MCU movies rather than the comics, which left several popular characters like Wolverine and his fellow X-Men off Marvel Vs Infinite’s roster. Still, some fans saw potential in Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite, and their efforts to enhance and refine the original release are now available for all to see.

A recent Deadpool comic references the popular crossover fighting game franchise, with its title character asking for a Marvel vs. Capcom 4.

Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite & Beyond is a fan-made mod that is now available to download for free on PC, as reported by GameSpot. This massive mod replaces the base Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite’s art style with a more striking, cel-shaded look reminiscent of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Some playable characters have new alternate color palettes, including some directly inspired by past Marvel Vs. Capcom games, while others have completely new alternate costumes like Spider-Man’s “Spider-Punk” outfit. New gameplay updates give characters altered movesets, and the mod has also added a four-player tag-team mode.

The Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite & Beyond mod project was first started by a modder named WistfulHopes before being taken over by Maximillian “Maximilian Dood” Christiansen, a big-name fighting game streamer who famously spearheaded the moment to get Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 rereleased before Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics did exactly that. He would spend roughly $30,000 of his own money to hire a team of artists and programmers with the goal of drawing more players toward the Marvel Vs. Capcom series.

Since Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite & Beyond is a free passion project, Maximillian Christiansen won’t be making any of the money he spent on the mod back. Instead, he and the talented team of modders behind the project hope that players who were less than impressed with the original Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite will find a more enjoyable experience with the transformative new mod – even more so now that the base game is currently being offered at discounted prices at certain online retailers.
