The Chronicled Banner is coming back in Version 5.3, as the latest Genshin Impact livestream revealed which characters and weapons will feature in its second iteration. While the original Chronicled Banner was met with much controversy, the developers of Genshin Impact have decided to bring it back for Version 5.3 during the Lantern Rite – with some notable adjustments. Namely, Genshin Impact characters no longer need to have three banner appearances to feature in the Chronicled Banner.
Given that Shenhe in Genshin Impact was last featured 619 days ago, and has only had one rerun since her debut in Version 2.4, she was the perfect candidate for the new Chronicled Banner. With over 90 playable characters, it has become an impossible task for Genshin Impact to organize a consistent banner schedule, and the Chronicled Banner was designed to alleviate the burden. While many players see it as a band-aid fix to a larger problem, it would seem that the developers aren’t yet ready to commit to triple banners in Genshin Impact.

The latest Geshin Impact livestream reveals official gameplay footage for Mavuika, Citlali, and Lan Yan, as well as two new Lantern Rite skins.
The new Chronicled Banner in Genshin Impact is themed around Liyue characters (and Tartaglia), allowing players a chance to obtain notable 5-stars such as Baizhu, Ganyu, or Xiao. By contrast, the 5-star weapons featured in the new Chronicled Banner are a lot less valuable, as many of them are either outdated or underwhelming – though Primordial Jade Cutter and Polar Star should attract plenty of interest. It can safely be assumed that players will be able to obtain 4-star Liyue characters as well, but it remains to be seen if Lan Yan will also be present in the pool. The banner was announced on the latest livestream, but it was also shared with the Genshin Impact community on Reddit by Bisentinel.

Given the absence of Yelan and Xianyun, the developers have all but confirmed that the purpose of the Chronicled Banner is akin to a retirement home for old or unpopular Genshin Impact characters. While the format of the Chronicled Banner itself is sound, the main issue that Genshin Impact players have is its lack of consistency. There is no guarantee that the Chronicled Banner will return on a set schedule, and it took almost a year for it to feature again.
Version 5.3 will launch on January 1, 2025, and the Chronicled Banner will have separate pity from the Event Banners. Given that there is no way of knowing if the Chronicled Banner will rerun in the future, Genshin Impact players are advised to only spend their Primogems if they can guarantee the 5-star of their choice. It should be noted that the Lantern Rite in Genshin Impact will award players with a grand total of 20 Intertwined Wishes via login rewards and in-game mail.
