Summary
- One of the biggest debates in the Final Fantasy community has always been the love triangle between Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa.
- The debate was started again recently when Rebirth’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, said Aeirth’s love for Cloud is “sisterly”.
- Aerith’s voice actor, Briana White, has responded to the restarted debate and asked shippers to touch noses and relax.
Briana White, the voice actor behind Aerith in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, has told fans to “relax” after the game’s director accidentally restarted a long-standing debate about Cloud and Aeirth’s relationship.
If you’ve spent more than a few minutes in the Final Fantasy 7 community, chances are that you’re more than aware of the all-time biggest debate – who Cloud’s canonical love interest is. This subject has already been talked to death since the original Final Fantasy 7 released, but it’s become an even hotter topic thanks to Remake and Rebirth, which put greater focus on the love triangle than before.
Although there are a lot of fans who want Cloud and Aerith to end up together due to their chemistry and character arc, most would agree that Tifa is the canonical choice due to her having the game’s only kiss scene and being with Cloud in the original timeline. This train of thought was recently given a bit more weight by the game’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi.
Aerith Voice Actor Tells Fans To “Touch Noses” Over Shipping Debate
While speaking to Inverse, Hamaguchi noted that, in his opinion, Aerith’s love for Cloud is “sisterly”, which seemingly puts to rest the idea that the two are meant to be together. As you can imagine, this reignited the love triangle debate once again, with fans on both sides arguing over whether Cloud is in love with Tifa or Aerith.
In response to the debates, Aerith’s voice actor, Briana White, took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the matter. Instead of supporting one side or the other, White asked Final Fantasy fans to “relax” about the great shipping debate and realise that everyone is part of the “same family” when it comes to loving the game’s characters.
When my sibling & I would fight as kids, my mom would tell us to touch noses until we inevitably started giggling and got over it. I say this with love: FF7 shippers need to touch noses. We’re all the same family in loving these characters so relax. – Briana White
While I would love White’s completely fair request to be respected by fans, I sadly think that the debate surrounding Cloud’s relationship with Aerith and Tifa isn’t going to end there, no matter who ‘wins’. Just remember the real people behind the characters that end up becoming a part of these arguments.
