Sonic Dream Team Releases Shadow Update

The Apple Arcade exclusive action platformer Sonic Dream Team has a new content update that adds Shadow the Hedgehog as a playable character with his own unique set of abilities, along with new challenges and rewards to earn. The latest content update in Sonic Dream Team serves as a tie-in with the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 feature film that will also feature Shadow as a primary character.

Sonic Dream Team is an action platformer developed by Hardlight, a developer known for its longtime partnership with Sega and its output of mobile-friendly Sonic games. The game, which is available exclusively on the Apple Arcade subscription service for Apple devices, features gameplay akin to the usual 3D Sonic titles, with cumulative awards earned over time as players progress to unlock new characters and upgrade abilities.

Now, players have even more to look forward to in the game as Sonic Dream Team developer Hardlight shared a trailer for a new update adding Shadow the Hedgehog as a playable character. The update features several new challenge levels featuring brand-new rewards exclusive to Shadow along with new music and collectibles from the various Sonic games in which he appears.

The update comes just in time for the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theaters later this week, which brings Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves, into the ongoing story of the iconic series’ feature film adaptation. Shadow’s addition to Sonic Dream Team brings with it a series of new abilities like Chaos Control and Chaos Shift, inspired by abilities from Sonic Adventure 2, in which he debuted.

Shadow has had a huge presence in the Sonic franchise throughout 2024 overall, not just due to the upcoming movie but also the recent release of Sonic x Shadow Generations. That game was an expanded remaster of the original Sonic Generations featuring both the original game with visual and quality-of-life improvements and an all-new storyline starring Shadow as the playable protagonist.

For those on other platforms looking for some Sonic gaming on their mobile devices, Sonic Dash and its sequel are still available on mobile, featuring a more traditional endless runner experience. For fans who may have missed out on it, the open-world title Sonic Frontiers is currently available for free on the PS5 for members of the Premium and Extra tiers of the PlayStation Plus subscription service, along with the rest of its game catalog.
