A new report claims that Paramount has greenlit a sequel to the still-not-released Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is already in development and the plan is for it to hit theaters in 2027.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 lands in theaters on December 25, a Christmas treat for all. The third entry in the live-action adaption series based on the popular Sega games has received a lot of positive reviews from critics and currently has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 87 percent. And Paramount seems convinced that Sonic 3—which introduces the villainous Shadow voiced by Keanu Reeves—will be as successful as the past films, and has reportedly already fast-tracked a fourth film.

On December 19, Variety exclusively reported that a fourth Sonic film, likely titled Sonic the Hedgehog 4, is already in development at Paramount. The next entry in the extremely successful series is currently set to arrive in theaters in 2027.

Variety didn’t have any plot or character details to share about the next entry in the series, likely because there’s nothing to share yet, but I’d bet my bottom dollar that Schwartz returns to voice Sonic. I’m less convinced that Carrey will be back as Robotnik as the actor has claimed to be semi-retired and, after three installments, might be ready to move on. But dump enough money and you can make anyone return for a cameo.

The previous Sonic films starring Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik have been very successful at the box office. Combined, the movies have brought in over $750 million at the box office.

It’s wild to think that, not many years ago, the world was mocking ugly Sonic as seen in the first trailer and many of us were expecting the film to flop and be forgotten. Instead, I’m writing about the fourth entry in a live-action franchise that includes a TV spin-off. Never count Sonic out, I guess.
