A Pokemon fan has redesigned the beloved Water-type starter Squirtle into a knight, and the community is keen to see more pocket monsters transported into the medieval aesthetic. Pokemon fans got a taste of the before times when Pokemon Legends: Arceus was released, featuring a story set long before the events of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl in the Hisui region. Thanks to Squirtle’s new fan art, the call for more old-fashioned Pokemon games has begun.
The Pokemon IP continued to thrive in 2024, and the ongoing success of the Nintendo Switch RPGs, the popular anime, and the trading card game is expected to soar in 2025. The latter tabletop hobby recently received a mobile alternative offering trainers the joy of opening booster packs digitally, and the title has an exciting future ahead within its first year of content. A recent leak outlined Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Mythical Island PvP and teased new promos and expansions for January, and fans also have Pokemon Legends: Z-A to look forward to next year.

The drawing is impressive, and the Water-type suits the armor, including pauldrons, a tail protector, and a helmet. Squirtle is a popular OG Pokemon that gets the fan-art treatment regularly, including one Pokemon fan’s redesign of Squirtle into a Digimon, and the artist behind the knight transformation confirmed they were making illustrations of all the Kanto starters within an adventure setting.
Pokemon Fan Transforms Squirtle Into a Knight
Redditors went out of their way to appoint a new, dashing title for Squirtle’s knight form, including Sir Squirt and War Turtle. One fan of the illustration thought the turtle knight would fit in a hypothetical Mystery Dungeon game set in medieval times, where Pokemon would have different classes. The Water-type is certainly a fan-favorite, so much so that fans are convinced Squirtle should be the Water starter in the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Squirtle was first introduced in Generation 1, hailing from the Kanto region, and the tiny turtle evolves into Wartortle at level 16 and Blastoise at level 36. Squirtle and its evolutions are relatively easy to obtain in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and each stage makes a formidable battle opponent using various abilities, including Torrent and Rain Dish. The Water-type was one of three original starters alongside Charmander and Bulbasaur, at the beginning of Pokemon Red, Green, Blue, FireRed, and LeafGreen.
