A tale of rewrites, reshoots, and negative test screening feedback reports. Is the upcoming MCU film headed towards failure?
When Is Chris Evans Returning?
According to reports, Evans is set to be part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, which will feature a plethora of Marvel’s biggest characters. Any Avengers movie is something that people look forward to and that’s going to capture the attention of audiences worldwide, and this will be no different. Robert Downey Jr. is also going to be part of the film as Doctor Doom, and having two of the MCU’s biggest acting stars return to the franchise is certainly capturing people’s attention.
Evans took on a cameo performance in Deadpool & Wolverine by reprising his role as Johnny Storm, which was entertaining. However, his role in Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be more serious and impactful on the overall story rather than just being done to entertain. It’s currently unconfirmed who will be portrayed in this film, whether Evans will continue as Steve Rogers and Captain America or if he will be something entirely different. It has been rumored that Evans will be portraying Nomad in the Avengers: Doomsday, but it still remains to be seen whether or not that will end up happening.
What He Could Have Done Instead
Something that Marvel has done a great job with since the launch of Disney Plus is creating unique content for that platform. The MCU television shows that have streamed on that platform have been a big hit with fans and have also helped to enhance the overall storyline and the characters within them. Loki and Wandavision are great examples of that, with both shows helping to drive the MCU forward in a new and unique way. That’s something that should’ve happened with Captain America too, showcasing him returning all of the Infinity Stones.
That was the mission he undertook at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and people wanted to see that happen. Doing it via a television show would’ve allowed Marvel to put tons of detail into each stone and ensured that nothing was rushed while giving Evans the featured sendoff he deserved. The show had tons of potential and could easily have been interesting and entertaining, while it would have drawn in an audience because people cared about the Infinity Stones.
Marvel did a great job building up each Infinity Stone, explaining their powers and their importance. Therefore, it felt like a mistake and a cheap ending to let fans presume Captain America was going to take them all back. Considering their power, it would’ve made sense that different characters wanted to get their hands on them. It could’ve given him plenty of interesting challenges along the way that would have created a compelling television series. It could also have shown his life after leaving the Avengers, which people genuinely wanted to know about.
The Show Was Rumored At One Stage
This potential show isn’t just something that fans thought was a great idea and speculated about when discussing the franchise. It was rumored to be a series that Marvel Studios was considering green-lighting at some point. We Got This Covered reported that Marvel was considering this time-traveling idea at one stage, and it feels like a significant missed opportunity that they didn’t end up pursuing this. While seeing his return in Avengers: Doomsday will be entertaining, people wanted to see Evans in his classic role of Captain America once more, proving how beloved the character is.
Unfortunately, Marvel didn’t tap into a Disney Plus series with Evans because it would’ve gotten tons of attention, considering how big of a star he is and how influential he has been within the MCU. It could’ve included a lot of other characters at the same time as he moved into different timelines and areas to put the infinity stones back, while it would also have served as a perfect way to wrap up that character. Now, audiences are being met with an uncertain future surrounding Evans because while people are excited to see him return, there is concern that it could damage the incredible story he’s had in the MCU.
