Titled as Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, which is the Japanese title for the Like A Dragon series (which is a literal translation of Like A Dragon), it can be hard to envision the studio as anything but the developer of the Like A Dragon games. There are so many of the games and released in such a short period, surely the studio doesn’t have time for anything else.

Why Did Yakuza Become Like A Dragon?
Ryo Ga Gotoku, Yakuza, Like a Dragon… the naming of this series can get a bit confusing at times. Let’s explain it in this article.
Except, somehow, that would be a wildly incorrect assumption. RGG Studio has made a massive number of games, both currently and in the past between all of the Like A Dragon games. It is genuinely unbelievable how many games it has made. So let’s take a look at all of them, even the non-Like A Dragon ones.
How Many Non-Like A Dragon Games Has RGG Studio Made?
While the studio is known as RGG Studio now, it has gone through various names despite keeping much of the same staff. Some of these names include Amusement Vision, New Entertainment, and a few others before finally settling on Ryu Ga Gotoku studio around 2011. That’s obfuscated much of the work the studio has done, but we’re here to clear that all up.
Beyond the Like A Dragon series, from their earliest game in 1998 to the time of this article’s publishing, RGG Studio has developed a grand total of 21 non-Like A Dragon games. And while the Like A Dragon games still make up the vast majority of the studios developed titles, it is a much larger portion than you likely realised.
While the Judgment games don’t have the ‘Like A Dragon’ moniker, they are
still classed as being part of the series itself.
After all, RGG Studio has worked on some pretty acclaimed series, such as being the creators of Super Monkey Ball, Binary Domain, Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, Daytona USA, and Virtua Fighter 5. Sure, they weren’t all the greatest games ever made, but it’s incredible the studio finds the time to work on anything beyond Like A Dragon
How Many Games Has RGG Made In Total?
Now we know just how many games RGG studio has made that aren’t from the LIke A Dragon series, though there’s no denying that the series that makes the studio’s namesake is incredible invaluable to it. In total, RGG Studio has made approximately 48 games, including remakes and remasters. That makes 27 of those games just part of the Like A Dragon series, more than the entirety of every other game they’ve worked on.
Putting their origins as a studio at 1998 with the release of SpikeOut, that averages out to about two games a year. Except the scariest thing is that the average is fairly accurate. 2021 alone saw the release of the Judgment remaster, its sequel Lost Judgment, Virtua Fighter 5, and Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania.
They are an obscenely impressive studio for not just their workflow, but their diversity. With the Like A Dragon series having changed both combat system and setting, the possibilities are endless for what RGG Studio can do in future. And it really does seem to have the planning to achieve whatever it wants.
