Dragon Ball Super‘s Beerus, Champa, and the rest of the Gods of Destruction are all immensely powerful beings capable of endangering entire universes. Still, even they don’t get to live forever. Eventually, whether it’ll take centuries, millennia, or even more, a Destroyer God will either die or retire, sparking the search for a new being to take their place.

Now, while a God of Destruction getting replaced hasn’t happened in the Dragon Ball Super manga or anime yet, it’s definitely a thing based on certain events. One of the most notable fighters during the Tournament of Power arc is Universe 11’s Toppo, a mortal who’s also a God of Destruction trainee, meant to eventually replace their Destroyer, Belmod. Toppo’s current role confirms that Gods of Destruction can and do get replaced occasionally. But how exactly does that happen?

Before a Destroyer gets replaced, obviously, the current Destroyer has to be removed from his position. So, what needs to happen for that to occur? Well, despite their immense power, the Gods of Destruction are not immortal and can die, and the easiest way for that to happen is if their respective Supreme Kai dies. The Destroyer and Supreme Kai of each universe share a Life Link that causes one to die if the other does as well. Apart from Destroyers and Supreme Kais, Piccolo and Kami once shared a Life Link as well. The Supreme Kais are all far weaker compared to Gods of Destruction, so if your goal is to kill a Destroyer, the best bet is to go after the Supreme Kai. That’s how Zamasu did it. There hasn’t been an instance of a God of Destruction dying in combat in the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime, but Zeno has wiped out Destroyers along with their respective universes in the Tournament of Power.

Death isn’t the only way a Destroyer can be removed from power though. There are certain rules that they must follow, and should they break these rules, the Omni-King Zeno can oust them on the spot, or if he deems it necessary, erase them outright. Here are some of the rules they must observe:

• Two Gods of Destruction aren’t allowed to fight each other unless given permission by Zeno. The force that a battle between two Destroyers produces is enough to destroy the universe they’re in, which is why it’s so dangerous.
• Gods of Destruction must not travel through time or allow anyone else to do so. There does seem to be some leniency with this rule though, because Beerus hasn’t stopped Goku and the Z Fighters from time-traveling. At times, Beerus even had Whis travel through time for him, such as in Dragon Ball Super episode 67, “With New Hope in His Heart – Farewell, Trunks”.
• If a God of Destruction isn’t doing their job properly, this could be grounds for Zeno to replace them.

The last, and most pleasant way, is if the Destroyer willingly steps down and retires. Belmod plans on retiring and passing his role on to Toppo, though only the manga makes it clear that his retirement is his decision.

There are currently two known methods for a mortal to become appointed as a God of Destruction. The first is if Zeno himself selects someone to become a Destroyer God after removing the current Destroyer of their universe. Because the act of Zeno removing a Destroyer due to them violating the rules is so sudden, Zeno himself can pick out who he wants as a replacement.

The second method is being selected by your universe’s Angel to be a candidate for replacing the God of Destruction in the future. This is the case with Universe 11’s Toppo, as he was selected by his universe’s Angel, Marcarita, to become the next God of Destruction after Belmod.

Who Are Qualified to Become Destroyers?

The selection pool for God of Destructions is much broader than it is for the Supreme Kais. For one thing, Destroyers aren’t limited to one species, as anyone has the potential to become a Destroyer. The biggest requirement is just being strong enough. A God of Destruction’s role in the universe is to eliminate any worlds, races, or beings that threaten the development of their universe. So, a Destroyer has to be incredibly strong to destroy universal threats.

A certain type of mindset or moral code is also something to consider for someone to be fit to be a God of Destruction. If a person is too kind-hearted, they won’t be a good pick because the job literally entails them wiping out entire races and cultures, even if it is for the betterment of the universe. On the other hand, if an individual is too evil, they’re likely to just do what they want and plunge the universe into chaos.

Does Beerus Already Have a Replacement?

Whether it’s in the Dragon Ball Super manga or anime, Whis has yet to find a suitable replacement for Universe 7’s God of Destruction. Fans have speculated for years that it could only be Goku and Vegeta, but Whis actually already offered them the position in the manga. They declined the offer though, because they wanted to reach that level of power on their own merit. Whis also suggested Gohan as a possible candidate in Dragon Ball Super chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future”, but Beerus said he didn’t have the right personality. This comment was likely referring to Gohan being a pacifist, which doesn’t exactly suit the role of a Destroyer.

“No way. Not a chance. Destruction isn’t in the cards for someone that strait-laced.” – Beerus in response to Whis asking if he thinks Gohan is a good candidate for the next Destroyer

When you think about it, it’s actually hard to imagine Goku or Vegeta wiping out entire populations of people either, even if it was for the “greater good”. Sure, Vegeta is still a pretty rugged character who’s prone to anger, but he’s far from the murderous Saiyan prince he once was. Some might suspect Frieza a possible candidate, but that’s unlikely. Despite their job of destroying worlds, Gods of Destruction aren’t, and shouldn’t be, evil. So, for now, it’s still unclear who Beerus’ replacement will be.
