Helldivers 2's Urban Environment Needs One More Cherry On Top

The world of Helldivers 2 has seen a drastic change, as an old threat has returned to wreak havoc on Super Earth’s goal of galactic freedom. The Omens of Tyranny update saw the arrival of the Illuminate, an old foe from the previous title, and while it is the main draw of the major patch, one can say that another addition has helped in the game’s new-found success. Aside from putting in a new faction, Helldivers 2 was also graced with a new city environment where players can fight that returning threat. It is a fantastic battleground, as the many destructible buildings and objects emphasize how deadly the Illuminate (and Helldivers) can be. As good as it is though, it has the potential to improve, and it’s up to Arrowhead Game Studios to see and seize the opportunity.

On the day of The Game Awards 2024, Helldivers 2 announced and immediately released the Omens of Tyranny update. The community welcomed the surprise with open arms, as both the returning threat and the new urban environment that came with the patch improved gameplay significantly. This is especially true for the city-like area, as revolving its design around compact buildings and destructible objects has forced players to create new strategies and weapon loadouts, adding more variety to the game. Still, there’s a way to improve it, and one of the things that Arrowhead Game Studios can do is give it new types of structures. While not an easy task, it would certainly make the urban environment more fun and engaging, something the developer will want.

Helldivers 2’s newest threat, the Illuminate, shows that that threat has the qualities that make the Automatons and Terminids work.

What New Building Types Should Be Added to Helldivers 2’s Urban Environment

While the recently added city-like battleground is a great place to fight Helldivers 2‘s Illuminate threat, updating it to have unique building types would help make it better. Arrowhead Game Studios can get creative with it considering the setting, as the developer can add things such as:

  • Certain structures that players can enter which are still fully destructible, making them temporary shelters that can offer some respite before heading back into action
  • Stores or other businesses that can be looted for ammo and other supplies, incentivizing players to be on the lookout while in the city
  • Scattered bunkers that players as well as the enemy can use to hide from incoming fire, making fights within the city more engaging

Such changes could help improve Helldivers 2‘s new urban environment, and there’s potential to do even more with it. Hopefully, Arrowhead Game Studios sees the potential, as enhancing it could be what the game needs to propel it to new heights.

How Adding Unique Structures to the New Urban Environment Opens up More Opportunities for Helldivers 2’s Growth

If adding new structures to the recent update’s urban environment proves successful, then it’s possible that the Terminids and the Automatons can get something similar. Arrowhead Game Studios may provide them with their own city-like maps and unique buildings, freshening up the experience of engaging them while turning them into much greater threats than before. While such a change could result in some of the hardest mission objectives in Helldivers 2, especially given how the insect and robot-like foes aggressively behave, it at least guarantees more things for players to do, preventing the game from going stale anytime soon.

One of the biggest reasons for Helldivers 2‘s massive player count spike, aside from the return of the Illuminate, is that there’s a new and interesting place that has effectively improved the gameplay experience. If adding an urban environment can get people to enjoy the game even more, one can only imagine the positive reception if it received new building types. Arrowhead Game Studios should highly consider it, as it can only benefit Helldivers 2.
