Fallout 76’s latest update, Gleaming Depths, has introduced some new features and game modes. It has also changed the way that legendary items work. Prior to this update, an item could only have 3 legendary effects outside of cursed and unique-named weapons.
Now, players can unlock 4-star effects that can be applied to weapon and armor pieces. These are new effects that have been introduced with this update. While there has been some negativity surrounding this feature, it does give veteran players new items to work towards unlocking. This guide will go through all there is to know about the new 4-star legendary system.

Just as with previous updates, the Gleaming Depths update for Fallout 76 introduces a ton of new and welcome changes to the game.
How To Get A 4 Star Legendary Item
It’s not possible to roll a 4-star legendary item. However, a fourth effect can be applied to an existing weapon or armor piece, provided the player has the means to craft it.In order to craft a 4-star legendary effect, you’ll need a 4-star effect box mod. You’ll also need some resources. The resources depend on the mod you are trying to craft. The items range from junk items and purified water to certain serums and even Vault Steel. There are a total of 30 4-star legendary effects. 14 are for weapons, and 16 are made to go on armor and Power Armor pieces.
Obtaining these box mods is a bit tricky. While they can be traded between players, because they are new, and pretty rare, if you want to purchase one from another player, then you had better be willing to spend quite a lot to obtain one.
Similar to all of the other legendary effects in the game, players have a small chance to receive a 4-star legendary box mod upon scrapping a 4-star legendary item. There’s also a small chance for the player to learn how to craft the box mod themselves. However, the chances are incredibly slim.
You get 4-star legendary items by completing raids. Raids are the newest game mode introduced to Fallout 76. It is aimed at high-level players and those who work well as part of a team. There has been a lot of talk on various online forums about 4-star enemies that can be found across Appalachia. However, this seems to be untrue. When this feature was undergoing testing, 4-star enemies could spawn outside of raids. But, for now, at least, it looks like players can only pick up 4-star legendary items by grinding raids.

The ones that are highly sought after are Pyromaniac’s, Viper’s, and Pin-Pointer’s. It’s important to keep in mind that the value of these box mods and rarity will change over time. As time goes on, these mods will become less rare and therefore slightly less valuable. Also, Bethesda does like to make changes to effects. So, it’s possible that what is seen as valuable today, could be significantly less valuable after future updates.
4-Star Legendary Armor Effects
As for legendary armor effects, this is split into two categories; standard armor and Power Armor. That said, some of the box mods can be applied to both regular armor and Power Armor pieces. While value is subjective, 4-star legendary armor mods tend to be worth a little more than many of the 4-star weapon mods. All of the 4-star legendary armor effects can be seen in the table below:

Armor & Power Armor |
+200 Damage Resist For 10 Seconds When Standing Still (20 Second Cooldown) (Up To +1000 On Full Stack) |
Aegis, Reflective, Rejuvenator’s, and Ranger’s are seen as the most valuable box mods for armor pieces. As mentioned in the weapon section above, the values will change and eventually go down as more players get their hands on these mods by completing raids. Since each box mod can only be applied to one piece of armor, the grind to get enough of a particular box mod for each armor piece is a long one. However, if you are fortunate enough to unlock the ability to craft one of the more desirable armor effects, then it won’t be that difficult to put together a full set of top-tier 4-star legendary armor.
