Variety reported that Courteney Cox is coming back to Scream 7. She will reprise her role as legacy character Gale Weathers, which is something that fans have been wondering about for a long time. As Variety also reported, Cox said in an interview with the publication in September 2024, “I’m not officially signed on. I’m not, but there will be a ‘Scream 7.’” Thankfully, Cox will be in the horror sequel along with her longtime co-star Neve Campbell, who is playing Sidney Campbell. There are now three legacy cast members: Cox, Campbell, and Mason Gooding, who is reprising his part of Chad Meeks-Martin.

The Scream 7 cast added an actor from Prime Video’s The Boys and Gen V, but who is the newcomer playing in Ghostface’s next outing?
Cox played Gale in all six Scream movies and it would have been a big disappointment if she hadn’t come back for Scream 7. Many want Gale to have a strong storyline in the new movie since Gale is so crucial to the battle against Ghostface. Every aspect of Gale’s life has been explored in the slasher franchise, from her love life to her journalism career. Gale’s relationship with Sidney is also one of the most riveting aspects of the franchise. They didn’t like each other at first, but as time went on, they began to respect and admire each other.
It has been fun to see Gale work across various mediums. She started as a broadcast journalism reporting on the Ghostface murders and has also written books. In Scream 6, Gale was living in New York City and working on a morning show. Gale is the victim of a gruesome attack in Scream 6, but since she survives, fans have been hopeful that she would come back to the horror franchise.
In a 2023 interview with Variety, Cox said she convinced Wes Craven to cast her as Gale in Scream by writing a letter. She explained she had played nice “girl next door” characters like Monica Gellar on Friends but wanted to portray the tough-skinned Gale. Cox said of the first movie:
“It was over the top in the perfect way. You really care about the characters because they were unique, and you don’t laugh at them, you laugh with them because they’re smart. If they were dumb, they were supposed to be and they’re endearing.”
It’s unclear exactly how much screentime Cox will get in Scream 7. Hopefully, since Gale is such a fan-favorite character and also a Scream final girl, she will appear in most of it. But it’s also possible that Gale has been popping in and out of Sidney’s life ever since the events of Scream 6. It’s also unknown if they live in the same place. Since there is a long wait until Scream 7 is released on February 27th, 2026, there’s plenty of time for fans to try to guess what’s going on with the hilarious, intelligent, and always quippy Gale.
