Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra producer Amy Hennig recently shared some new concept art and other details about the upcoming superhero action title, including a look at its version of Wakanda. Skydance Games first gave players a glimpse at Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra at the D23 Expo in September 2022, with a full trailer being shown a couple of years later during the Game Developers Conference 2024 back in March. Set against the backdrop of World War 2, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will see Captain America join forces with the Black Panther of that era to prevent the titular terrorist organization from taking over the world.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’s presence at this year’s GDC also revealed the game’s voice cast and some more story details, with DC Comics veteran Khary Payton lending his voice to Azzuri/Black Panther and Red Dead Redemption 2 alumni Drew Moerlein reporting for duty as Captain America. Marvel 1943 will feature two other playable characters alongside the main heroes, with Howling Commandos Gabriel Jones backing up Cap and Wakadan spy Nanali working with Black Panther to unravel a Hydra plot in WW2 Paris. As shown in the Marvel 1943 story trailer, these heroes will initially be at odds with each other before coming together to save the world.

More insight into Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’s setting and story were recently shared by Amy Henning in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. This included concept art depicting Marvel 1943’s version of Wakanda, which Henning says is still largely unknown to the outside world at this point in time. Protecting the futuristic African nation is a lush jungle, as shown in the aforementioned concept art. According to Henning, Marvel 1943 will deal with Wakanda being drawn into the growing conflict of World War 2, eventually leading to its discovery by the rest of the Marvel universe.

Amy Henning also described how Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’s setting allowed her and the rest of the Skydance development team to channel their love of World War 2-era adventure films and her past work on the Uncharted series to craft a story filled with twists and turns. She also notes that the game explores a younger Steve Rogers who isn’t quite the legendary Captain America that fans know from the MCU movies and other Marvel video games. It also follows the story of Azzuri, the grandfather of the Black Panther that gamers are probably more familiar with.
Back in July, it was announced that Skydance Games would be partnering with the former Embracer Group-owned PLAION to publish Marvel 1943, a surprising move given how both are independent companies working on a triple-A game based on a massive franchise. There is currently no set release date for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra save for a 2025 launch window.
