Last week’s Game Awards was one of the most loaded shows in its history with everything from a first look at The Witcher 4 to the reveal of Naughty Dog’s next game. Conspicuous by its absence was Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra. An Amy Hennig-led game that’s supposed to be launching in 2025, and it’s Hennig who has provided an update on how it’s doing via a first look at some of its concept art.
Hennig is heading up the Marvel project at Skydance Mew Media and shared some of the finer details about Rise Of Hydra’s story and lead characters with Entertainment Weekly. Hennig explained that the Captain America in the game will be a lot less mature than the version of the hero Marvel fans are used to. The Black Panther, on the other hand, will be quite the opposite since it’s Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather.

Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra Looks Good… But Maybe Too Good
Captain America and Black Panther’s WW2 adventure has near perfect photorealism, but does it have any real artstyle beneath it?
In the only trailer for Rise Of Hydra we’ve seen so far, Cap’ and Azzuri clash on the streets of Paris, seemingly fighting the same enemy but unwilling to work together. Hennig not only revealed to EW that some of the game will also take place in Azzuri’s fictional home of Wakanda, but she provided a first look at how the closed-off African nation will look in the game.
A First Look At Rise Of Hydra’s Wakandan Jungle
Not The Wakanda You Know
Much like Captain America, the Wakanda we visit in Rise Of Hydra will be a lot different from the one we’ve seen a lot of in the MCU. The artwork shows a stunning Wakandan jungle, and while I’m sure less futuristic versions of the nation’s cities will be included in the game, they’re nowhere to be seen in this first look.
Hennig explains that 1940s Wakanda is much more closed off than the modern-day version of the country from the movies. So closed off that its existence is seemingly a secret from the rest of the world, hence Captain America and his allies not knowing who they’re dealing with when in the presence of Wakanda’s king.
Azzuri is forced to leave Wakanda to fight for a common cause that will affect his own nation as much as the US and other countries during World War 2, presumably the rise of enemy organization Hydra, as the name of the game suggests. It was hinted in the trailer that a third hero is running around Paris clashing with Cap’ and Azzuri, but Hennig stopped short of revealing who exactly that is. My money is still on Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is a 2025 action-adventure game from Amy Hennig and the team at Skydance New Media. Set in the height of World War 2, you’ll play as four characters, including Captain America.
