Playable Build of Canceled Star Wars Battlefront 3 Discovered

Summary

  • Modders are working to complete the third Star Wars: Battlefront game after finding a playable build.
  • The playable build of the canceled Star Wars: Battlefront 3 for the Nintendo Wii is dated just over a week before the project was reportedly canceled.

A playable build of the canceled third Star Wars: Battlefront game has surfaced, and modders have taken it upon themselves to finish it. Before DICE rebooted the Star Wars Battlefront series in 2015, now-defunct developer Free Radical gave Star Wars fans the ability to live out their favorite skirmishes from the classic movies in the original Star Wars: Battlefront back in 2004. A sequel was released a year later to coincide with Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, incorporating elements from that film in addition to space battles and playable Hero characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

A few handheld and mobile Star Wars: Battlefront games were released in the years to follow, and Free Radical planned to continue the main series. The third entry would have utilized improved technology to allow seamless ground-to-space battles, while concept art for the fourth suggested a “what-if” story campaign featuring alternate Star Wars scenarios like Luke Skywalker turning to the dark side. Unfortunately, neither of these projects came to fruition, as Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was reportedly canceled in 2008 after a rocky development cycle. Free Radical design co-founder Steve Ellis would later claim that Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was nearly finished when LucasArts shut it down.

If Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection had the full remake treatment, it could have potentially avoided its botched launch.

While Star Wars: Battlefront 3 never officially saw the light of day, its remains have been uncovered across the internet in the years since its cancelation. As reported by GamesRadar, a group of game preservationists called Free Radical Archives recently chanced across a playable build of the canceled Star Wars: Battlefront 3 for the Nintendo Wii, dated just over a week before the project was reportedly canceled. YouTube user iamashaymin Modding posted a makeshift trailer using footage of this build, featuring cutscenes of Clone Troopers and other Imperial forces hunting Jedi during Order 66.

Modders Want to Finish Playable Star Wars: Battlefront 3 Build

Gameplay-wise, this playable Star Wars: Battlefront 3 seems about the same as the previous two Star Wars: Battlefront entries, with soldiers from across the Original and Prequel trilogies battling across classic Star Wars locations to see who can take over the most territory and deplete the enemy forces before the clock runs out. At one point, viewers can catch a glimpse of Rahm Kota, the Jedi general who was first introduced in 2008’s Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and would later be referenced in 2022’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

Free Radical Archives is now planning to complete this version of the unreleased Star Wars: Battlefront 3 to the best of its ability, though it admits that there are some bugs and glitches that might never be resolved. The group says that it hopes to release the finished result free of charge, giving gamers a taste of what could have been with a playable version of the Star Wars: Battlefront game that was tragically never completed.
