Video games have become Hollywood’s new source of IP thanks to the success of series like The Last of Us, Secret Level, and Fallout. That trend isn’t slowing down, as 2024’s Pacific Drive is the next video game lined up for an adaptation.
Pacific Drive was released in February and debuted to positive reviews, earning 79 on Metacritic. The game was developed by Ironwood Studios in its debut release and published by Kepler Interactive. Pacific Drive is described as a supernatural survival driving game set in a retro-punk version of the Pacific Northwest. In Pacific Drive, the player’s station wagon is their only lifeline, and they must scavenge resources on their travels to survive the dangers of the Olympic Exclusion Zone. The game was recently recognized as a Best Debut Indie nominee at the 2024 Game Awards.

Pacific Drive TV Adaptation Is In Development
Now Pacific Drive is set to live on in another medium with Variety revealing that James Wan’s company Atomic Monster has acquired the rights to turn the game into a television series. Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Rob Hackett, and The Menagerie Productions’ Jeff Ludwig are set as executive producers. Atomic Monster is best known for producing horror works like Malignant and M3GAN, but it also had a hand in bringing to life the 2021 Mortal Kombat film adaptation along with its upcoming sequel, which Wan is also a producer on. On the TV side, the company helped produce Swamp Thing, Archive 81, and Teacup.
Ironwood Studios celebrated the TV adaptation news on its social channels saying “We’re happy to announce that we’re working with Atomic Monster and James Wan to develop a new tv show based on Pacific Drive! The positive reception to this news has been incredible, thank you all so much – we’re so excited to see what happens.” The project is still in early development and as such neither a writing team nor network or streamer have been announced yet. Pacific Drive is a first-person player-driven game, so it will likely need to create a new set of characters to drive its story, similar to what Five Nights at Freddy’s did in its film adaptation.
Pacific Drive Is The Latest In a Wave of Video Game Adaptations
Pacific Drive is just one of a few new video game adaptations in the works that have been announced recently. In just the last couple of months, Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 adaptation got the green light for a TV series on Prime Video, a movie adaptation of Hello Neighbor was confirmed, and Lionsgate revealed it was moving forward on an adaptation of the iconic horror game Outlast. When the Pacific Drive adaptation does eventually hit screens it will have plenty of company in the video game adaptation landscape.
