Mortal Kombat 1‘s latest season of Invasions could be an ominous sign for the game mode’s future. Invasions has been running in Mortal Kombat 1 since release, acting as a secondary story mode of sorts. It also had its own unique mechanics that set it apart from the rest of the game. However, as Invasions heads into its ninth season, one decision made by the developers could raise some eyebrows. On one hand, it could be a simple throwback for players to experience. However, there’s also a chance that it could hold more worrying omens for Mortal Kombat 1.
The Invasions Mode in Mortal Kombat 1 is a single-player mode that is new to the series. Each season of Invasions spotlights a specific character, who acts as the final boss of said season. Using any fighters they desire, players travel across a map, clearing fights and minigames en route to each zone’s final battle. Each season of Invasions offers unique cosmetics, typically based in some way off the spotlight fighter in question, that can be earned through rewards or bought with in-game currency in the seasonal store. Invasions effectively took the place of Mortal Kombat‘s Krypt, but with a completely different approach. However, the existence of a rerun could be seen as a big red flag.

Mortal Kombat 1’s First Season Rerun Raises Some Concerning Questions
Mortal Kombat 1 Just Repeated its First Invasions Season
In a surprise move, Season 9 of Mortal Kombat 1‘s Invasions is a repeat of the first, Season of the Spectre. It’s not a complete rerun, with a few of the encounters having changed since the first run. However, Scorpion is once again the main boss, with the same story as the season’s first run. This is also reflected with the available rewards, most of which are from said first run. Admittedly, this does give players a second chance at cosmetics they missed the first time around. However, it also raises the question of what future seasons of Invasions will look like.
Mortal Kombat 1’s Invasions Still Have Room to Grow
It’s possible that future seasons will also be repeats. Considering how many potential Invasions themes haven’t been used yet, that would be a shame. Prominent characters like Johnny Cage and Kitana have not had their own seasons yet, and there are a lot of solid ideas for themes that could go potentially unused. Of course, the amount of seasons would likely only stretch to the amount of playable fighters in the game, likely excluding guest characters. Even then, there is still so much more potential for future seasons. It would be a shame if Mortal Kombat 1‘s remaining Invasions were all reruns of past content.
Mortal Kombat’s Invasion Rerun is Worrying Combined With Recent Rumors
The Season of the Spectre rerun itself came at an unfortunate time. With rumors of Mortal Kombat 1 DLC cancellations, concern for the game’s future is at a high. The game running its first Invasions season rerun around the same time only adds to those worries. Of course, this is in no way a guarantee that original Invasions seasons have come to an end. At the same time, the timing of this season’s launch couldn’t have been worse. With any luck, these events are just a coincidence, and Mortal Kombat 1 will be able to produce more new seasons of Invasions soon.
It would be a shame if
Mortal Kombat 1
‘s remaining Invasions were all reruns of past content.
Rerun seasons are good for players who missed out originally, but hopefully they aren’t all that’s left. Even though future Mortal Kombat games might not have Invasions, they’re a part of Mortal Kombat 1‘s identity. There is still a lot of potential for more themes for future seasons. It would be disappointing if the eight seasons that have passed turned out to be the only ones that players will see from now on.
