Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently talked about a major new direction for Xbox. The tech giant is working on a goal to make Xbox games accessible on multiple platforms such as PCs, mobile devices, and even competing consoles.
Microsoft has been long-time focusing on expanding Xbox experiences across all devices, not just consoles
In a recent Microsoft annual shareholders meeting as spotted by Game File, there were several sneak peeks, as I would call them, into the company’s future. But focusing more on the ‘mobile’ specific talk, there were some interesting ‘promises’ which might ignite more expectations and a strategy that targets multiple platforms.
On being asked about the early return on Microsoft’s $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard King investment and the progress of its overall gaming strategy, Satya Nadella expressed strong confidence in the company’s position in the industry. Nadella emphasized that gaming is a major growth area for entertainment, and Microsoft has been passionate about it for a long time.
He explained that Microsoft is focused on making gaming accessible to everyone, even “redefining what it means to be an Xbox fan, it’s about being able to enjoy Xbox on all your devices”. Nadella is optimistic about the company’s long-term potential, further stating that as a company, they can bring the “best of AI innovation, cloud innovation, console innovation, PC innovation to build the best games that can be enjoyed by gamers everywhere.”
It isn’t a secret that Microsoft is actively pushing to have its name etched across multiple platforms, although the mobile-specific interest is quite evident. The company last year had discussed plans for a next-gen Gaming Console that aims to merge Mobile, PC and Xbox, they even delayed the Xbox Mobile App Store launch as they prioritized additional market research.
Some feel rather disappointed by this move; a few Xbox fans felt the uniqueness of a console emerge from their exclusive titles. They fear sharing such Xbox titles on other consoles could make the brand any less unique. Others felt that this was a welcome development for the industry, enabling game makers to reach more users more freely across different devices.
Ultimately, this approach redefines what it means to be an Xbox fan. Instead of focusing only on console players, Microsoft wants to welcome gamers across all platforms and ensure everyone has access to Xbox’s growing library of games.
