I Think This Upcoming Halloween Horror Movie Has A Brilliant And Unique Premise

There are a lot of Halloween horror movies, but there is one upcoming scary film that I think has a particularly cool and intelligent storyline.

As Deadline explained, this is Monroe and Neon’s third horror movie. The actress previously starred in Watcher, which was released in 2022, and Longlegs, which came out earlier in 2024 and featured Nicolas Cage as a serial killer. Monroe’s other horror or thriller films include Greta andTau. However, there’s no doubt that Monroe’s most famous movie is It Follows, which was released in 2014. She played Jay Height, a college student who becomes cursed after sleeping with her boyfriend. In the impressive film, Jay now sees a mysterious entity everywhere and tries to stop it.

Maika Monroe as Julia in Watcher

Chloe Okuno and Monroe have worked together previously as well as Okuno directed Watcher. Okuno will write and direct Brides, which is about Sally Bishop (Monroe) who goes on vacation to a villa in Italy with her husband. The problem? There is a count there, who pays attention to Sally and is likely evil. The plot is fascinating and, like in Watcher, Monroe is playing a character who is married and dealing with a scary, strange situation. The premise of Brides is a reminder that a horror movie’s setting is integral to its success. Whether it’s a single-location horror movie or the film is set in a school, a movie is more riveting when the characters are stuck or in a unique place. In the case of Brides, Sally and her husband thought they would be going on a fun, peaceful, and relaxing trip, but something is clearly wrong.

In an interview with IndieWire, Monroe talked about playing so many horror characters. She said:

“I’ve definitely gotten better at it. I’ve learned that for me, for my mental health, I have to be able to let go of it at the end of the day. A lot of the movies that I do are very dark and very intense, and it doesn’t do me any good to live in that space for longer than I needed to.”

Monroe continued that she hopes her characters are “grounded” and she works from “my own traumas and my own experiences.” She definitely does a great job with that. Like the most intriguing final girls, Monroe’s characters are just like real people with busy lives and rich inner worlds. They are so much more than just cheesy examples of this horror trope.

Brides doesn’t have a release date yet, but Monroe’s fans will be waiting to hear when they see the scream queen in another awesome role.
