Legacy Go To Netflix (But It Won't)

Summary

  • Bosch: Legacy is ending after season 3 on Amazon Prime Video in March 2025.
  • The Bosch: Legacy and Lincoln Lawyer crossover is unlikely due to Netflix and Amazon rivalry.
  • Fans can petition to save Bosch: Legacy as Amazon opts for a Ballard spin-off.

Bosch: Legacy will end after season 3 airs on Prime Video in March 2025. Amazon wielded the axe on one of their most successful shows back in September 2024 for reasons only they know. The Ballard spin-off is still moving forward, with Harry Bosch making sporadic appearances in its debut season, but his solo crime stories are officially coming to an end. It’s a complicated situation for Bosch’s creator, Michael Connelly, as he is contracted to Amazon, but in an ideal world, it would be great to see Bosch: Legacy move to Netflix and link up with The Lincoln Lawyer.

The Lincoln Lawyer’s protagonist, Mickey Haller, is Harry Bosch’s half brother in Michael Connelly’s expanded book universe, and they have featured in several crossovers. However, because Netflix owns the rights to the television version, and Amazon own Bosch: Legacy, the two have been unable to feature alongside each other.

Netflix And Amazon Probably Wouldn’t Work Together to Facilitate A Bosch/Lincoln Lawyer Crossover, But It Would Be Great If They Did

Bosch and haller

Netflix and Amazon have a lot of things in common: both streamers love canceling shows at the height of their popularity, and ignoring fan’s pleas to keep them going, as well as being highly profitable ventures. Despite these striking similarities, Netflix and Amazon would probably never work alongside each other, with fierce competition existing between them. However, when Bosch: Legacy was canceled by Amazon back in September, fans began to question whether there was some way Netflix could take on Bosch: Legacy and link it up with The Lincoln Lawyer. Michael Connelly created Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller in his expanded crime book universe, and both characters have featured in solo entries and crossovers. After all, they are intrinsically linked as brothers from another mother, with J. Michael “Mickey” Haller, Sr. being the father of both men, and a prominent criminal defense lawyer in Los Angeles.

Netlfix and Amazon would probably never work alongside each other, with fierce competition existing between them.

The possibilities for television crossover storylines featuring Bosch and Haller are endless, but Netflix and Amazon are standing in the way of this ever happening. If only they could come to a similar agreement to the one Sony and Disney struck up to share guardianship of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in recent years. Amazon don’t want to invest in any future seasons of Bosch: Legacy, but they hold all the cards as they own the rights to the Harry Bosch character, and he’ll be appearing in guest spots in the Ballard spin-off. This means it’s not even an option to sell the rights to Netflix, and let them develop their own crime universe featuring Harry Bosch and his half brother.

Bosch: Legacy Would Easily Be Picked Up By Another Streamer Like Netflix If It Wasn’t For Amazon’s Half-Hearted Plans For The Bosch-verse

In February 2023, Amazon announced the exciting expansion of Michael Connelly’s Bosch-verse, with two new spin-offs: Bosch’s detective partner, Jerry Edgar, would be getting his own show based in Little Haiti on an undercover mission. Alongside this, cold case investigator, Renee Ballard would get her own series, after appearing alongside Harry Bosch in several joint adventures in Connelly’s books. Back in September, Amazon had a change of heart and abruptly canceled Bosch: Legacy while also nixing plans for the Jerry Edgar spin-off, and they put all their efforts into developing the Ballard spin-off. Bosch: Legacy is one of Amazon’s most successful shows, with an increase in viewership in each of its first two seasons, so it would naturally be a good fit for another streamer, like Netflix.

Amazon doesn’t want to invest in the expansion of the Bosch universe, so why not let Harry Bosch go to Netflix or another streamer? Just because Amazon thinks Harry Bosch’s solo stories in Bosch: Legacy have reached their natural conclusion, it doesn’t mean their competitors think the same, and the fans certainly don’t think so. Amazon wants to focus on the Ballard spin-off, but still be able to call upon Harry Bosch to pop in on occasion, presumably to entice viewers to watch it, and boost their ratings. However, it doesn’t seem like it follows Michael Connelly’s vision for the Bosch-verse, as Renee Ballard is joint co-lead with Harry Bosch in all but one of her appearances in the books. For some reason, Ballard is getting her own show and Bosch is being relegated to playing a bit part in her story, at the expense of his own show. If Amazon truly thinks Renee Ballard is strong enough to carry her own show without Bosch as a co-lead, they should let Titus Welliver’s iconic ex LAPD detective spread his wings and continue his own story over at Netflix, and have meaningful crossovers with Mickey Haller in The Lincoln Lawyer. Alternatively, if Amazon shared the rights to Harry Bosch with Netflix, Bosch: Legacy could not only continue over there, but Bosch could also still be a part of Ballard’s cold case unit at Amazon.
