James Gunn’s Update On This Anticipated DCU Project

James Gunn's Update On This Anticipated DCU Project

Summary

  • James Gunn is working on projects like Booster Gold but struggles with scripts’ quality.
  • Booster Gold film’s production is currently stalled due to the script not meeting Gunn’s standards.
  • Other DCU projects have been greenlit, and Gunn’s track record suggests Booster Gold may be produced eventually.

Now that the DCU is off and running, there are all kinds of characters that DC comics fans would love to see on the big screen. Some characters that people are dying to see are either already up or have projects planned. Others, like Clayface, are characters people might not have realized they wanted to see until their projects were announced, and then there’s Booster Gold, a character that has long been in the works in one form or another but has never really been done right.

Now that James Gunn has taken over the DCU, there is renewed excitement about the possibility of a Booster Gold movie coming into reality sooner, rather than later. There has been one rumor after another about how far along this project is and even who might star in it. But anyone thinking such a movie may be on the horizon will be disappointed. James Gunn gave a recent update about where he is with the Booster Gold and it doesn’t sound like he’s very happy with where he is in regards of moving forward with the project.

Booster Gold Not Close To Hitting The Screen

Speaking to the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast recently, Gunn was specifically asked about whether a Booster Gold movie was still in the works. He started off by saying that he understands why people want to see the character on the big screen and it’s similar to the reason why there’s even talk about such a project being worked on.

When Gunn took over the DCU, he loved that he was able to give heroes like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman the honor he felt they deserved. But there were also lesser known characters like Peacemaker that he wanted to make television shows or movies around. It was in this vein that he started working on something revolving around Booster Gold.

However, when Gunn was asked point blank whether Kumail Nanjiani had officially been cast as Booster Gold, Gunn threw some cold water down on the whole thing.

Gunn threw some cold water down on the whole thing.

“I mean, we’re not quite there yet in terms of Booster Gold,” Gunn responded. “You know, we haven’t made any, you know, we’re not quite there yet. We’re just not quite there in terms of, you know, the scripts aren’t quite where I want them to be.”

And that really is where the problem comes into focus. Gunn has previously said that Booster Gold is one of the most requested movie or television show projects he’s come across since taking over the DCU. He understands that people who love DC Comics love Booster Gold and he wants to give them something that they will love when they see it on the screen.

However, for now at least, it doesn’t appear that he feels as though he can even really talk about whether someone has been cast for the role. Some of that is clearly just the usual executive speak that is all about obfuscating whether or not a deal has been reached before an official announcement. But there’s plenty of real pain behind those comments from someone who knows that fans of the DCU really want to see Booster Gold in a movie, and that means he has to do it right.

James Gunn’s Perfectionism Won’t Allow The Project Off The Ground Yet

Gunn wants people to know that he’s not standing in front of Booster Gold out of spite, or pride. It’s about getting things right.

“I’m not a crazy person. I’m not sitting there micromanaging everything and I’m never happy with anything. I’m not one of those guys, but I have to feel it in my heart, you know, and that’s happened. So it’s happened with
Supergirl
. It’s
happened with
Lanterns

. It’s happened with another thing that was greenlit last week that I can’t even talk about yet. And it’s happened with, you know, some other things. So there’s other things out there that we’re, we’re, we’re, you know, we’re moving. But, you know, other things aren’t quite there yet. And Booster Gold’s not quite there.”

Gunn also mentioned two other projects that have long been talked about but haven’t “gotten off the ground” in Brave and the Bold and Waller. That should actually have DCU fans pretty excited about the possibility that a Booster Gold movie will eventually get made. That the project is not just going to fall by the wayside.

Gunn isn’t one of those people who talks about a project like Booster Gold unless he wants to make it a reality. And his exclamation that he’s not a crazy control freak is likely his way of sending a message to the DCU fans that he wants the movie to work just as much as they do. The question now isn’t whether or not Booster Gold is going to be made. It continues to be when. And who stars in the film is going to be up in the air until the movie starts to get made.
