Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the final movie in Sony Animation’s Spider-Verse animated trilogy, has found two familiar captains to steer it.
Owing to unconventional visuals and storytelling, the first two parts of the trilogy saw unprecedented critical and commercial success for Sony. Both films grossed a combined $1.07 billion at the global box office and are one of the highest-rated animated films on Rotten Tomatoes—with 97% and 95% critic scores respectively—earning a spot in its 300 best movies of all time. The first installment, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, won the 2019 Oscar for Best Animated Feature Oscar. The movie has been plagued by production delays, being moved from its initial date of March 2024 to July 2024—due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike—and then delayed indefinitely, leading to rumors about the movie being scrapped.

According to Deadline, Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will helm the final part of the Spider-Verse trilogy. The filmmakers expressed their commitment to ending Miles Morales’ journey on a satisfying note. “We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it—we’re bringing everything we’ve got,” said the filmmakers. The project will also see the return of Phil Lord and Chris Miller as producers, alongside Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Jinko Gotoh. Deadline had previously reported that 2025 had been struck out by Sony as a potential release year for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Both filmmakers’ wealth of experience in the franchise justifies their pick as Sony’s directors of choice to continue the Award-wining legacy of the franchise in Beyond The Spider-Verse. Persichetti started as one of the co-directors for the 2019 Adademy-Award winning Into the Spider-Verse and returned as an executive producer for the sequel; Thompson headed the production design team for the first movie and teamed with Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers in the directors’ seat for the sequel.
Despite being well received, Across the Spider-verse’s cliffhanger didn’t go too well with some fans, especially those who preferred a concrete finish. Thus, the stakes have never been higher for the future of Sony’s Spider-Man power projection with Beyond the Spider-Verse. With the sequel set to release no earlier than 2026, and Sony’s woes in their live-action adaptations of the character’s villains, the studio will likely tread carefully to protect the reputation of its animated gem—instead, playing it safe with tried-and-trusted hands in the form of Persichetti and Thompson.
