Think twice before dismissing what could be some great deck additions.
There are a bunch of new cards in Mythical Island, along with some new versions of familiar faces. If you’re wondering what the best cards you can find in the set are, don’t worry, we scoured every region from Kanto to Paldea for every card you’re going to need.
10
Leaf
Save Your Energy
There’s no shame in a tactical retreat and with the Leaf supporter, you can expend fewer resources to keep your Pokemon safe. When you play Leaf, you reduce the Retreat Cost of your active Pokemon by two generic Energy for the turn.
You can only retreat once each turn so make sure you pick the right replacement Pokemon.
With Leaf, you’ll likely only really want to run one copy of the card in your deck. You only have 20 cards to work with and most Pokemon can safely be retreated with just an X Speed. If you have a Pokemon with a high Retreat Cost though, Leaf can come in handy.
9
Serperior
Get More For Less
Serperior is a stage 2 Pokemon that lets you maximize your Grass Energy to powerup your Pokemon faster than ever before. With its Jungle Totem ability, Serperior makes it so all your Grass Energy generate two Energy when they’re attached to your Grass Pokemon.
While Serperior itself might not do much on its own, it only has one attack, a four Energy Solar Beam for 70 damage. What it can do is accelerate your other Grass Pokemon, like Venusaur ex or even a Liligant into using their attacks much earlier than normal. You’ll be able to use your Venusaur ex’s Giant Bloom attack with just two Grass Energy, which is incredible.
8
Vaporeon
Never Get Caught Without
Speaking of Pokemon with good abilities, the new Vaporeon has a strong one that makes sure you’ll never waste your Water Energies again. Vaporeon comes with the Wash Out ability, which lets you move a Water Energy from one of your Benched Pokemon to your Active Pokemon, but only if they’re Water types.

Pokemon Pocket: 12 Most Powerful Coin Flip Moves
Can the flip of a single coin can truly decide a match? With these powerful moves, almost certainly.
With this effect, you can retreat a Pokemon that’s taken some damage and then just move all those Water Energies to the next Active Pokemon. Imagine building up your Vaporeon for a few turn, have it tank a hit or two, and then swap it out to a Blastoise ex to power up its attack to boosted amount in a single turn without ever using a Misty.
7
Mythical Slab
An Ancient Artifact
A fairly niche Item card, the Mythcial Slap only really works in a pure Psychic deck and kind of functions like a mini Poke Ball. This Trainer has you look at the top card of your deck. If that card is a Psychic Pokemon you get to add it to your hand. If it is anything else, a Trainer, a Grass Pokemon, anything, it goes on the bottom of your deck.
While it doesn’t guarantee anything like the Poke Ball card does, it can hit Stage 1 and 2 Pokemon cards so if you already have all the Basic Pokemon out of your deck, it can help sift through until you find one.
6
Marshadow
A 1-2 Punch
Fighting Pokemon has been lacking a bit in Pokemon Pocket. While a few can be very strong, like Primeape, they still don’t quite put up the same numbers as other types like Psychic or Fire.
Marshadow is here to balance the odds a little bit in your favor. This Fighting-type has only one attack, Revenge, though it changes the amount of damage it deals depending on what happened last turn. If one of your Pokemon was Knocked Out by your opponent on the previous turn, Revenge deals 100 damage, otherwise, it deals 40.
5
Gyarados ex
All Washed Up
The angriest shrimp you’ve ever seen is back in the Mythical Island set, this time as an ex card with a fascinating new effect. Guarados ex comes in with a respectable 180 HP, guaranteeing it’ll stick around through most attacks currently in the game.

Pokemon Pocket: 13 Best Pokemon Abilities
These Pokemon abilities have the potential to change the tide of battle.
Its only attack, Rampaging Whirlpool, is super easy to reach and deals a fairly significant amount of damage at 140 for four Energy. While four Energy is kind of a lot, you have access to Misty to turbo power any of your Water Pokemon so with a little luck, you can slam your opponents for a ton of damage very quickly.
4
Aerodactyl ex
Lock In Your Opponents
Another Fighting-type Pokemon that helps boost typing is Aerodactyl ex. This ancient Pokemon is back from extinction to lock your opponent out of the game with a unique ability.
Primeval Law is a frustrating ability that prevents your opponents from evolving their Active Pokemon, though it only affects the Active Pokemon. Since Aerodactyl ex is a Stage 1 Pokemon, it doesn’t take much to get it going, and Primeval Law doesn’t require Aerodactyl ex to be in the Active Spot to use, so you can have it sit off on the Bench for a bit.
3
Blue
Smell You Later
A neat little card that has plenty of potential the longer the game goes is the new Supporter, Blue. This card, based on the rival from the Kanto games, reduces all damage all your Pokemon would take by -10 damage.
This works for both your Active Pokemon and all your Benched ones as well. As more cards are released that can deal damage to multiple Benched Pokemon at once, you’ll be soaking up to 40 damage at a time with Blue.
2
Tauros
The ex Bane
The first card in Pokemon Pocket to specifically target ex Pokemon, Tauros marks a huge leap forward in terms of combating some of the strongest Pokemon in the game. This Basic Pokemon has just one attack, Fighting Tackle, dealing 40 damage normally.
If you’re up against an ex Pokemon however, it upgrades the attack to 120 damage total, which is a pretty significant hit to any ex. It won’t K.O. many, but with a Giovanni, that number just goes up.
1
Mew ex
Just A Little Genetic Tampering
Headlining the set is Mew ex, the original Mythical Pokemon, and it is a powerful card in the right hands. The first attack, Psyshot, is nothing to write home about really, just 20 damage for one Psychic Energy.
Genome Hacking is where the power is. It costs three colorless to use and lets you pick an attack of your opponent’s Active Pokemon and use it instead. It doesn’t require you to have the same energy as the original’s attack, but is dependent on whether or not your opponent’s Active Pokemon has a good attack.
