Some Black Myth: Wukong fans review bomb Baldur’s Gate 3 after the Chinese action game loses in a major category at The Game Awards 2024.

Alanah Pearce, who previously worked for Sony’s acclaimed Santa Monica Studio, was at The Game Awards this year. In a recent stream, Pearce noted that she saw a member of the Black Myth: Wukong development team “crying” after the game lost Game of the Year to Astro Bot. Pearce said that this was “definitely unusual” for the award show. A viewer then asked Pearce if the Black Myth developer was crying celebratory tears, to which Pearce clarified that no, the team was “upset that they didn’t win.” While something like this isn’t exactly common for The Game Awards, it does make sense that one would get emotional that a game they spent years working on didn’t win Game of the Year.

Black Myth: Wukong Developers Were Reportedly Not Happy About Losing GOTY

There are many who are not happy about Astro Bot winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. The backlash echoes The Game Awards 2023 situation where people were upset that Spider-Man 2 lost to Baldur’s Gate 3. Black Myth‘s own producer weighed in on the drama, revealing that he was so confident in the game that he wrote his Game of the Year award acceptance speech two years ago. These comments have in turn sparked their own backlash online, with some siding with Black Myth and others criticizing its studio for perceived arrogance.

While Black Myth: Wukong didn’t win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, it did win Best Action Game and the Players’ Voice award. As for Game of the Year, Black Myth was always a long shot considering how Game Awards voting works and how the game was the lowest-rated game ever nominated for Game of the Year in the history of the show. In contrast, Astro Bot was the highest-rated game of the year and is in fact within the top 100 highest-rated video games ever made.
