The Witcher 4 was officially revealed at The Game Awards 2024, and with it the revelation that long-time protagonist of the series, Geralt of Rivia, would not not be the protagonist, and instead, his adoptive daughter, Ciri, would instead be the star of the game.
But this has obviously led to the question being asked – Will Geral appear in The Witcher 4 at all? Or will Cira of Cintra, full name Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, take all the limelight. Here’s what we know.
Will Geralt Be In The Witcher 4?
In short, yes it’s almost definitely confirmed that Geralt will appear in The Witcher 4. Hints from CD Projekt Red have stated as much, and given the setting, it would be very surprising that Geralt doesn’t feature in some way.
Beyond this, it’s also highly likely that there will be sections of the game where you play as Geralt. This is because in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, there were several sections where you took control of other Witchers, including Ciri, during missions.
As a result, there’s pretty much a guarantee that Geralt will appear, be playable, and have a significant role in the story of The Witcher 4, despite likely being retired for several years.
Why Is Ciri The Protagonist in The Witcher 4
Ciri is the Protagonist in the upcoming Witcher game because she was always supposed to be. Since The Last Wish, a series of stories considered to be the first volume of the Witcher franchise, Ciri was set to become the successor of Geralt.
While players may be used to Geralt, it also isn’t the first time we’ve played as her, as The Witcher 3 had several sequences where Ciri was a playable character.
However, CD Projekt Red’s choice to have Ciri as the protagonist has drawn (unwarranted) controversy from gamers. Largely players who were unfamiliar with the source material or previous games.
