If you’re looking for a survival game with a slightly different flavor than most, Astrobotanica is for you. While Subnautica takes you to the ocean floor, Valheim transports you to a world of Norse mythology, and Palworld makes you a creature tamer, Astrobotanica takes place on a prehistoric version of Earth. Between a demo, Kickstarter, and Steam Early Access launch, there’s a lot to get excited about – Astrobotanica has big plans for 2025.
Instead of the deep blue ocean or foreign stars, Astrobotanica takes you back home. Slipping into the space shoes of extra-terrestrial Xel, you’re exploring an Earth 300,000 years in the past. Xel needs to find alien (it’s all relative) seeds to help feed their species, and it’s up to you to thrive in this survival game to meet that goal.
You’ll cultivate soil, brew potions, avoid dangerous wildlife, interact with primitive Neanderthals, and upgrade your surroundings in an effort to eventually return home. Earth’s air may be cleaner than ever, but as an alien, you need to find canisters of CO2 so you can actually breathe. Do you see what I mean when I say reverse Subnautica now?
2025 will be a big year for Astrobotanica, as developer Space Goblin Studio has now outlined what can be expected in the lead up to launch. The team says it will launch a Kickstarter in the spring, in an effort to make “the game bigger, longer, and even more convoluted” than the initial reveal. Kickstarter backers will be able to play the closed Alpha via Steam before anyone else, and help Space Goblin Studio mold Astrobotanica into the game it will be on release.
Even if you don’t back the game, you’ll still have a chance to play it ahead of launch. Space Goblin Studio will host a public demo in the autumn of 2025, which will help it further refine the game before early access begins. “The intention is to gather a large sample of feedback from the general audience that Space Goblin can address ahead of the game’s early access launch, including tech tweaks due to testing on a wide variety of hardware and software setups via Steam users feedback,” the team explains.
The Astrobotanica Steam Early Access launch is planned for winter 2025, with a demo dropping before then. You can wishlist the game right now.
