Hitting Android and iOS devices in late October, Pokemon TCG Pocket has become a mega-hit, pulling in over $200 million as of December 3. In the free-to-play title, players seek to complete their Pokedex by opening daily trading card packs while also engaging in battles against both the computer and other fans. To obtain cards, players are taken to a carousel, where they can swipe through seemingly identical packs before selecting the one they’d like to open. Tiny alterations in these packs have led some to believe that there’s a secret tell, with many examining each booster in excruciating detail to determine which one may hold the most valuable cards.

Pokemon TCG Pocket’s current meta may be in for a shake-up with a new set slated to release early next year that could give one lacking type its due.

In a new interview with IGN, a spokesperson for Creatures Inc. addressed the matter, though they failed to give a concrete answer. “Which booster pack you pick up is up to you, and I think everyone will develop their own way of enjoying the game,” they said. “We paid particular attention to the process of selecting the booster pack, opening it, and looking at the cards so that it would feel fun.” One of the most popular theories postulates that opening Pokemon TCG Pocket packs with bent corners will result in better cards, though this idea seems to have become less popular over time. Following these comments, many now believe that there is no explicit trick to selecting a booster pack, and that the result is predetermined when a player opens the carousel screen.



In Pokemon TCG Pocket, players can also engage with the Wonder Pick system, allowing them to snag a random card from another fan’s recently opened pack. More evidence that the carousel gives players the illusion of choice was recently presented by the YouTuber PokeNinaa, who posted a short video of herself opening a pack while her friend quickly checked their Wonder Pick page. The moment PokeNinaa opened the booster carousel, her Wonder Pick appeared on her friend’s account, with the selections accurately represented even before she saw the cards herself.

On December 17, Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s second expansion, Mythical Island, was released. The new booster packs introduce around 80 new cards for players to find, including fan favorites Mew and Celebi. The developers have announced that limited trading will be added to the game in January 2025, with the feature expanding over time. Additionally, the Blastoise EX Drop Event will run from January 1 to January 15, 2025, allowing players to snag a new set of cards in Promo Pack A Series Vol 3.
