Too many people lock in a DPS hero in Marvel Rivals, and it’s impossible to get them to change. I’ve been playing the NetEase Games hero shooter most evenings since launch, and I’m often the only healer, fighting a Sisyphean battle to keep more than just my tank alive. People keep locking in Iron Fist, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, or Hela so often that the moment I see a fellow healer I can’t help but celebrate. Overwatch fixed its team balance problem with a role queue, but the creative director on Marvel Rivals says it currently has no plans for a similar system.
So if you’ve been holding out hope for a Marvel Rivals role queue, it isn’t currently on the cards. The multiplayer game is very much in its infancy, however, so I could see the feature being added much further down the line. Until then, make sure you know as many Marvel Rivals characters as possible so you can pick up your team’s slack.
“Right now, we’re not considering a role queue,” Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun ‘Guangguang’ Chen tells Dot Esports in a new interview. “The team’s goal is to offer a wider variety of team composition through team-up skills and their own designs, to let people play their Marvel superheroes rather than limiting players to choosing a role.
“From the data we’re seeing in our back end, things are going pretty solid. We want people to have a Marvel experience where they’re free to select what they want. [Since the closed beta test] things have been rational and within expectations. In our Competitive play recently, there are a lot of different compositions emerging from players and we’d like to continue to monitor these fun compositions and how they impact our game.”
I’ve already made it clear that I think Marvel Rivals needs some sort of role queue, but on reflection, there’s more to it than that. Yes, many of the tank and healer heroes also have offensive capabilities, but I think NetEase Games needs to find more ways to make both of these roles more appealing to players.
Perhaps NetEase Games could add some more role-specific team-ups. I enjoy the hero synergies you can already use, but more for roles that aren’t DPS would go a long way. Still, Marvel Rivals could use this idea to incentivize players to try someone other than Hawkeye or Hela.
You won’t have to worry about quick play and competitive exclusively for much longer, however, as the new Marvel Rivals Winter Celebration event has just been announced. Jeff’s Winter Splash Festival is a new game mode coming to the holiday revamp, where everyone plays the land shark and needs to coat the arena in snow (like a much more adorable game of Splatoon). There are even some new exclusive skins, and I can already hear my wallet crying out for Christmas Tree Groot and skiing gear Rocket.
Don’t forget to check out all the Marvel Rivals codes and Marvel Rivals Twitch drops when you can – that Magneto Galacta skin is worth getting a hold of.
