Legacy’s Ballard Spin-Off Needs This One Thing To Get Fans Hyped

Legacy's Ballard Spin-Off Needs This One Thing To Get Fans Hyped

Summary

  • Amazon axed plans for an expanded Bosch universe, leading to less excitement for Ballard’s spin-off.
  • Fans are worried about Ballard’s potential success due to a lack of info. Amazon needs to promote the show more.
  • Expect to see Harry Bosch featured heavily in promotional material for Ballard, despite Titus Welliver’s limited appearance.

Fans are still reeling from the cancelation of Bosch: Legacy ahead of the third season airing in March 2025. The Save Bosch: Legacy petition is pushing full steam ahead to try and convince Amazon to change their decision, and allow Michael Connelly’s crime universe to keep expanding. The spin-off based on cold case investigator, Renee Ballard, has just wrapped filming its first season, but there haven’t been many other details released about it thus far.

There was excitement about the Ballard spin-off prior to the cancelation of Bosch: Legacy and the axing of the Jerry Edgar spin-off. However, now the planned expanded universe has been scrapped, expectations have been muted somewhat. Amazon needs to ramp up excitement for Ballard soon, to get the Bosch-verse fans back on board.

What happened to the expansion of Michael Connelly’s exciting Bosch universe? In a word, Amazon! Fans were gearing up for not one, but THREE shows, all set in Harry Bosch’s world. Fans of Connelly’s books were hyped at the prospect of Renee Ballard getting in on the action, and joining forces with the ex LAPD detective in the finale of Bosch: Legacy season 3. This appearance will directly lead into her own spin-off series, and will feature Harry Bosch guest spots alongside her, and the plan was for him to continue in the lead role in Bosch: Legacy. To add to this, Bosch’s ex-partner, Jerry Edgar’s solo series was set to relocate to Little Haiti for an undercover mission with the FBI. Exciting, right? Amazon has killed the hopes and dreams of many Bosch fans, and this has sadly led to less interest in the only show that is currently moving forward in the Bosch-verse: Ballard.

Renee Ballard will be played by Maggie Q in the ten-episode first season, which is set to air in the Fall of 2025 on Prime Video. It’ll be based on Michael Connelly’s 2022 book, Desert Star, which is a joint Bosch/Ballard adventure. After Bosch: Legacy‘s cancelation, the fact that Titus Welliver would only play Harry Bosch in three episodes was focused on, as it shows a serious deviation from the books. Bosch: Legacy fans who aren’t clued up on the books haven’t even met Renee Ballard yet, so this just adds to the skepticism about the character being relied upon to steer the Bosch-verse in the future.

Save Bosch: Legacy Petition Key Facts

  • A petition to Save Bosch: Legacy can be signed HERE
  • The pressure is mounting on Amazon to renew its longest running drama
  • The fans have the power to Save Bosch: Legacy

Ballard completed filming last month, but overall details are pretty sketchy for the series, aside from cast announcements, and the fact that it’s pretty much the same production team on board who worked on Bosch: Legacy. Michael Connelly based the character of Renee Ballard on a real detective called Mitzi Roberts, who will be writing for the spin-off, as well as being a producer and technical advisor. Other than that, what do fans actually know? Amazon needs to start releasing more details about Ballard soon, or it faces the prospect of being dead on arrival. Even though Ballard probably won’t hit screens until late 2025, it’ll soon come around. The hype needs to start now, as the Bosch: Legacy fans are very disenfranchised at the moment. Of course, if Amazon listened to their fan base, they would know that already. This is why the petition is so important and actually has a dual purpose. Yes, fans want to save Bosch: Legacy, but they also want Ballard to succeed, and the two shows go hand in hand. Is it possible Amazon wants Ballard to fail? Sure. It would mean they could stop crying about having to spend money on shooting in Los Angeles, and focus on investing in shows that fit into their dodgy algorithm.

As for the promotion for Ballard, Amazon can’t spoil too much, with the character set to feature in Bosch: Legacy‘s finale, but a teaser trailer for the spin-off series soon wouldn’t be too much to ask for, would it? A glimpse of who Ballard actually is to give fans a bit of hope for the future. Now, because Amazon clearly has so much faith in Renee Ballard, Harry Bosch doesn’t need to feature in the trailer, surely? Correction: Amazon doesn’t have that much faith in Ballard because if it did, Bosch surely wouldn’t even need to feature. Prediction: The trailer will probably feature Harry Bosch a lot, despite Titus Welliver only appearing in three episodes. Amazon will try to trick the casual fans into thinking they are tuning in for a joint show (and it really should be) but this is a forced passing of the torch, with a little sprinkle of Bosch, for promotional reasons. By all means, head over to the official Ballard Instagram account, which currently has 261 followers. Great promotion, Amazon!
