How Does Level Scaling Work In Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 is an always-online game with there being many ways of interacting with other players, be they friends or random people. With other players, you can form guilds and parties and play co-op through the base campaign and endgame content, or just simply talk in the world chat.

When playing in a party, there is no restriction to joining and playing with friends in terms of level, letting even your strongest character jump into a party with a brand new character. Level scaling is crucial for playing with friends, but how exactly does it work?

How Does Level Scaling Work In Path of Exile 2?

Path of Exile 2 does have level scaling, and it can be toggled on or off when playing in a party. Only the leader of a party can determine if there is level scaling in a party. If level scaling is enabled:

  • Higher-level characters will be scaled down.
  • There is no experience penalty, though the higher-level character will only get as much XP as the weaker enemies usually drop.

You can also choose to play the game with level scaling turned off:

  • No character’s level or strength is modified.
  • There is an XP penalty for lower-leveled characters, so they won’t shoot up in level for fighting high-level enemies.

While disabling level scaling will lower the amount of XP the lower-level character gets, they will still get a normal amount and level up just as efficiently as when playing with level scaling turned on. Each area in the game has a specific level or range of levels that enemies will spawn at. With level scaling disabled, the level for each area will be a good indicator of where your party should be at before trying it out.

When playing alone, there is no level scaling and your settings won’t affect the game at all.

How To Enable Or Disable Level Scaling In Path of Exile 2

The Player Changing The Level Scaling Option

Only the party leader can enable or disable level scaling, much like Crossplay. If you are the party leader, open up the main menu and go to settings. Tab over to, “Game” and towards the bottom of the list is Default Level Downscaling, which is this game’s version of level scaling. Enabling that setting will activate Level Scaling, and disabling it will disable level scaling. This setting can also be changed at any time and the effects will be immediate for the rest of the party.
