Every time I check out the newest Skyrim mods, I come away needing to scrub my eyes. While there are some astounding gameplay tweaks, quests, and creative ideas on display, that game’s modding scene is so big that every time I blink there’s another upload that’ll haunt my nightmares for weeks. With the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC port around the corner, I’m certain Cloud’s latest adventure will also have many mods at launch. Square Enix thinks so, too, and the game’s director has asked players to refrain from making mods that aren’t, shall we say, ‘proper.’
Now that the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC release date is just months away, I’m sure modders are hard at work cooking up all manner of gameplay tweaks, visual improvements, and cosmetics they wish were already in the RPG. That said, there will no doubt be some…unsavory Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth mods, too. Director Naoki Hamaguchi asks that you all refrain from doing anything Cloud wouldn’t do.
“While the team has no plans for official in-game mod support, we respect the creativity of the modding community and welcome their creations – though we ask modders not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate,” Hamaguchi says in an Epic Games interview.
You might remember that Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida had a very similar statement before that game’s PC launch, and I’m afraid to say that asking modders nicely not to do seemingly doesn’t deter them.
A quick trip to Nexus Mods shows that the most popular FF7 Remake mods are character model replacements, with new outfits a popular download for most of the game’s cast. There are also plenty of PC performance improvement mods as well, but these are significantly less prevalent than outfit or character changes. So while we might see some “offensive or inappropriate” mods for FF7 Rebirth, history shows that the most popular mods will more than likely just put Cloud in his Kingdom Hearts fit, or turn Barrett into Master Chief.
Elsewhere in the interview, Hamaguchi says that the team at Square Enix “did have the desire to add an episodic story as a new DLC to the PC version” of Rebirth, but thought that bringing the game to the platform quicker was of the “highest priority.” That said, the team is listening to what players have to say, as Hamaguchi adds, “if we receive strong requests from players after the release regarding certain matters, we would like to consider them.”
