- Dani once again clarified that the “something big coming to Starr Park” referred to the Brawl Stars x Toy Story collaboration.
Dani, the Community Manager for Brawl Stars addressed the rising concerns surrounding the latest Toy Story update, which introduced the Brawl Stars X Toy Story Collab, Brawlidays, Pizza Planet Event, New Brawlers like Buzz Lightyear, Hypercharges, skins, and various other changes and fixes.
He revealed that Buzz Lightyear’s Laser and Saber modes will be getting a nerf with the next maintenance update, addressing one of the primary concerns of the community. He also addressed other important issues, regarding the Surge Lightyear Skin, Skin Vault/Safe feature, and changes to the Brawlidays Calendar.
Daniel Medeiros, popularly known as Dani, the beloved Brawl Stars Community Manager, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to address the Community’s growing concerns, mainly Buzz Lightyear. In his latest post, he discussed all the issues, right from Buzz Lightyear’s overpowering modes ruining matches, the need to own Surge to claim the free Surge Lightyear Skin, the devs’ decision not to utilize the Skin Vault/Safe feature, and the changes made to the Brawlidays Calendar.
Buzz Lightyear proved to be too overpowered for a Brawler
Firstly, if you haven’t logged in to Brawl Stars recently, consider yourself lucky to have avoided the constant Buzz Lightyear spams, ruining every single match across all the modes except Ranked. Many fans expressed their dissatisfaction and frustration on various social media platforms, highlighting how the introduction of Buzz has pushed the game into its worst state, especially in 5v5 game modes, with one user commenting, “Mainly because they allowed multiple of him in the same team.“
Fortunately, there is good news now, as he is receiving major nerfs to both his Laser and Saber modes in the upcoming maintenance. Dani also explained, “We did want to make him fun to play and make sure not to release him too weak, BUT Laser and Saber mode might have got too much love.”
Surge and Surge Lightyear Skin
Next, Dani clarified that you will need to own the brawler, Surge to claim the Surge Lightyear Skin for free. He explained, “Our plan was (and still is) to communicate it in a video and in a news post when the event starts.”
Adding onto this, he revealed that the Brawler will be obtainable using Pizza Slices during the Pizza Planet event, and the skin will be available for free for four months, giving you ample time to acquire the Brawler through various methods. He added, “If you don’t wanna grind or use your Credits for Surge, there’ll also be a good (Gem) offer in the Shop to get him.”
Skin Vault/Safe feature utilization for Surge Lightyear Skin
Regarding the use case of the Skin Vault/Safe feature, he explained that this feature was specifically developed for the Brawl Pass Skins, because of which the devs couldn’t easily add or extend its functions to tackle the current situation without requiring additional days or even weeks of dev time due to how it is currently implemented.
He referred to the issue as a corner case since Surge is a Legendary Brawler, adding, “In the past, we “solved” the issue by giving the Brawler beforehand or a Free Skin to very common Brawlers.” Moreover, he shared that the team also agrees that adding this skin to the Skin Vault would be better for people who don’t yet own the Brawler, stating, “would be a way better solution than all the options mentioned above.”
Changes in the Brawlidays Calendar
Lastly, he provided details on why new changes were made on the Brawlidays Calendar, explaining how the initial version offered 20 additional Presents and 1 less Legendary Starr drop, which was the proposal in mind, but it changed before going live and the teams had previous information due to miscommunication.
He outlined two main reasons regarding the changes, one being that the presents would have been way excessive, and the main reason being, that the primary intent of adding presents to the calendar was to build hype for the Mega Tree Present opening.
He further elaborated on how these things work in the developer version of the game, where work-in-progress features can change before going live. With regret, he pointed out that this one became public, before “the live version has gone live (similar to what happened with Mecha Paladin Surge available in Presents – It wasn’t final).”
Time-limited events
Dani explained that time-limited events are introduced as they bring back a lot of old players to the game while also making the game more attractive and fresh. He clarified that this particular event was already planned before they changed the content/update cycle, and they communicated about it in their 2025 roadmap. “So we should see a better balance between events and permanent features in the next year,” he added.
Additionally, he also clarified that the “something big coming to Starr Park” part in their road map announcement was about this Toy Story collaboration rather than any lore-related content. Reflecting on the topic, he believes that “it would have been better if we had said: Something big coming to Brawl Stars” or “maybe even better not having that line at all!“
