Some of these games on NSO are very lengthy with games like earthbound taking a player 30 hours to finish.
In Addition imagine the blowback if they made everyone buy super Mario Bros 3 for the switch after alternate buying it on the Wii/U/3ds
Paper Mario transitioning from a rpg isn’t a mystery sales play into that

Mario 35th anniversary axed after 6 months could eat into their nso revenue competing with Mario Bros on that service plus ongoing server costs and maint cost for a free celebration game
Everything Wii U well hard disagree there they wanted to do something different but the execution was poor yet they still had amazing games that were highly regarded when released on the switch and went on to see huge success as Iwata alluded to they didn’t want a more powerful system just to have a more powerful system they wanted to find new ways to engage the players but yeah it didn’t land
