News about what’s next for The Last of Us has been on many fans’ minds, and Naughty Dog’s surprise announcement at The Game Awards was not what many expected. Naughty Dog didn’t announce a new chapter of The Last of Us, but instead revealed a brand-new IP. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is a huge departure from The Last of Us. This time around, Naughty Dog is exploring an 80s-inspired retro-future that teases a melee focus.
While this may not be the announcement fans of The Last of Us were hoping for, that doesn’t mean there aren’t exciting things on the horizon for the franchise. The announcement of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet doesn’t mean The Last of Us Part 3 is off the table. The wait may just be a little while longer. However, 2025 still has plenty in store for The Last of Us fans.

TLOU Part 2 Remastered Could Give Insight Into TLOU Season 2’s Release Date
The second season of The Last of Us having a spring release target feels far more intentional now. With April being The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered‘s PC launch date, it would make a lot of sense for the HBO series to premiere around the same time. Of course, this is just speculation, and nothing has been made official, but releasing the two in close proximity would be ideal from a marketing perspective.
A Third Chapter of TLOU Has Yet to Be Revealed
Although hope for The Last of Us Part 3 continues, Naughty Dog has made it clear with its newly announced IP that its post-apocalyptic franchise may not be a top priority right now. Part 3 is still a possibility, but it seems like 2025 will not be the year an announcement gets made.
Of course, surprises could happen, but the compelling change of form Naughty Dog is taking with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is intriguing. The developer leaving the grounded nature of The Last of Us and Uncharted and opting for heavy sci-fi is exciting, even if it’s not exactly what was expected. So, there is no new The Last of Us game right now, but fans of the HBO series and PC gamers have plenty to look forward to.
