Summary
- Gwent is returning in The Witcher 4, as confirmed by executive producer Gosia Mitręga and game director Sebastian Kalemba.
- They also revealed that Geralt is enjoying retirement in Toussaint, slaying the odd monster from time to time.
- During the game, he will invite Ciri to visit, which has fans thinking that we might be able to challenge the gruff old Witcher to a game of Gwent.
The Witcher 4 is — of course — bringing back Gwent. And with Geralt also returning, fans think we’ll be going up against the reigning champion himself at some point in the new game, as Ciri follows in his footsteps to become the Continent’s best player.
And also the best monster slayer, I guess. Gwent is more important.
“I don’t think anyone will be disappointed,” executive producer Gosia Mitręga told Easy Allies when asked about Gwent returning.
“It’s a part of the experience, so absolutely,” game director Sebastian Kalemba added. “We also love Gwent, we cannot imagine [sic]”.
Geralt Is Living The Good Life In Toussaint
Speculation has run rampant for nearly a decade about what role Geralt will play in The Witcher 4, if any, and that discussion has been kicked up again with the confirmation that we’ll be playing as Ciri going forward.
But we already have a rough idea of what Geralt’s been up to in the years since we last saw him. Spoilers: lapping it up in retirement.
“He is for sure eating some suppers with Henrietta, while slaying monsters from time to time,” Kalemba told Skill Up, adding that Geralt will invite us to his mansion to bridge the gap between games.
One fan, Reddit user CerberusGate, speculates that “The Grand Gwent Tourney is held in Toussaint because the undefeated Grand Champion lives there”. InfectiousVapor, however, thinks that Geralt will teach Ciri how to play Gwent, introducing us to the game much like Aldert Geert did in The Witcher 3.
The big crisis in the game is the lack of original Gwent cards due to Geralt’s pillaging of everyone’s deck in TW3 — bartthetr0ll
Both could always be true: Geralt introduces a fledgling Ciri to the game, she goes out into the world and collects all of the overpowered cards and becomes a master, and then returns home to humble the old semi-retired Witcher.
However, despite the new CGI trailer shown at The Game Awards, Kalemba made it clear that the marketing campaign has not yet begun. The Witcher 4 wont be ready for some time, so we’ll have to wait a little while longer to hear anything more about Geralt’s role in the game, or Ciri’s newfound love of Gwent.
The Witcher IV is a single-player, open-world RPG from CD PROJEKT RED. At the start of a new saga, players take on the role of Ciri, a professional monster slayer, and embark on a journey through a brutal dark-fantasy world. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, it aims to be the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date.
